You can restore a recently closed Safari tab using built-in controls: on a Mac, open History > Recently Closed or press Shift-Command-T; on an iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the New Tab button and select the page. Steps vary slightly by device.
Restore a closed tab on Mac
Safari’s History menu lists recently closed tabs and windows. Apple documents these options in its Safari guide for Mac.
- Open Safari.
- In the menu bar, choose History > Recently Closed.
- Select the tab or window you want to reopen.
To reopen only the most recently closed item, choose History > Reopen Last Closed Tab or History > Reopen Last Closed Window. To restore the previous session’s windows, choose History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session.
You can also press Shift-Command-T to reopen the last closed tab. Press the shortcut again to move back through recently closed tabs, as described in Apple’s Mac web-browsing guide.

Restore a closed tab on iPhone
- Open Safari and go to the All Tabs view. Depending on your tab layout, use the Tabs button or the More button to get there.
- Touch and hold the New Tab button.
- Tap the page you want in the recently closed tabs list.

If the tab is not in the recently closed list
Check whether it is still open on another Apple device
If Safari is enabled in iCloud and your devices use the same Apple Account, iCloud keeps open tabs and browsing history up to date across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Check Safari’s iCloud Tabs area on another device to see whether the page is still open there; this is a way to find an open tab, not a guarantee of restoring one that has already been closed and synced away. Apple explains the requirements in its guide to keeping Safari in sync with iCloud.
Consider whether the tab was in Private Browsing
Private Browsing tabs do not appear in iPhone Safari history or in the list of tabs on other devices. Apple’s Safari guide for iPhone documents this limitation. The normal history and iCloud-tab locations therefore will not provide a recovery route for a closed Private Browsing tab.
