For local containers on a Mac, install Docker Desktop: choose the download for Apple silicon or Intel, move the app into Applications, launch it, and accept Docker’s terms. Docker Desktop runs the Docker engine inside a lightweight Linux virtual machine; the macOS Docker command-line client by itself does not provide an engine or runtime.
What you need before installing Docker on Mac
- A supported macOS release: Docker Desktop supports the current and two previous major macOS releases. That support window changes when Apple releases a new major version, so check Docker’s Mac installation requirements for the current list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- The correct installer for your Mac: Docker offers separate downloads for Apple silicon and Intel.
On Apple silicon, Rosetta 2 is no longer strictly required to run Docker Desktop, but Docker recommends installing it for the best experience. Some optional command-line tools built for Darwin/AMD64 still require Rosetta. To install it manually, run softwareupdate --install-rosetta in Terminal.
Install Docker Desktop on Mac
- Go to Docker’s Docker Desktop for Mac installation page and download the build that matches your chip: Apple silicon or Intel.
- Open the downloaded
Docker.dmgfile. - Drag
Docker.appto the Applications folder. The default location is/Applications/Docker.app. - Open Docker.app from Applications. At first launch, Docker displays the Docker Subscription Service Agreement. Accept it to run Docker Desktop, or defer acceptance until a later launch.
- Wait for Docker Desktop to start. In the default setup, no further configuration is needed.
Before installing or updating, quit apps that may call Docker in the background, including terminals, Visual Studio Code, and agent apps. Keep the installer volume mounted until the installation finishes. If the Mac is managed through mobile device management (MDM), Docker advises using its PKG installer instead of the interactive DMG flow.
Run a container and check that Docker works
Once Docker Desktop has started, open Terminal and run a practical test:

docker run hello-worldThe command asks Docker to run the hello-world image. If it completes and prints a confirmation message, the Docker client has reached an engine and run a container. This is an example verification command; results depend on the installation and network access.
The default setup puts Docker CLI tools in $HOME/.docker/bin and adds that directory to your PATH. If Terminal reports that docker cannot be found, check Docker Desktop’s CLI installation options under Settings > Advanced, then open a new terminal session so it reads the updated PATH.

Understand the difference between Docker Desktop and the Docker CLI
Docker Desktop is the straightforward local option Docker recommends for Mac. It provides the engine and runs containers in a lightweight Linux VM. The macOS Docker binary alone is only a client: it does not include dockerd, a runtime environment, Buildx, or Docker Compose. A CLI-only arrangement therefore needs an engine hosted separately, such as in a VM or on a remote Linux machine. Docker’s guidance says, “On Windows and Mac, we recommend that you install Docker Desktop instead.” See its binary installation guidance.
Docker Desktop’s Linux VM also separates container root from the Mac host: Docker states that a container running as root inside the VM does not thereby gain root access to macOS. When you bind-mount a host folder into a container, the host folder retains its original permissions.

Administrator prompts, CLI paths, and socket access
Docker Desktop runs as an unprivileged macOS user. Docker says the default configuration needs no privileged access, but some optional or necessary configuration choices can request administrator authorization—for example, creating system-wide CLI symlinks or the default /var/run/docker.sock symlink. CLI symlinks in the default setup live under $HOME/.docker/bin. Details are in Docker’s Mac permissions documentation.
Docker Desktop sets the desktop-linux context on startup, which the Docker CLI uses to find the engine socket. If a client specifically expects the default socket path and that symlink is not enabled, Docker documents setting DOCKER_HOST to the path of the user’s Docker socket. Use the path applicable to your configuration; do not assume every setup uses the same socket location.

Install Docker Desktop from the command line or for managed Macs
Docker documents a command-line installation path for administrators: mount the DMG with hdiutil, run the app’s install command, and detach the mounted volume. Fleet and MDM deployments should use the PKG installer. Its options include license acceptance, a target user for privileged configuration, --backend=docker-vmm, and organization or settings controls. These are administrator-focused deployment routes; for a personal Mac, the interactive DMG installation above is simpler. See Docker’s installation instructions for current commands and flags.
Check Docker Desktop licensing for business use
Docker’s installation guide summarizes Docker Desktop as free for personal use, education, non-commercial open-source projects, and small businesses that meet both conditions: fewer than 250 employees and less than US$10 million in annual revenue. Other professional use, government entities, and enterprises that exceed either large-business threshold require a paid subscription under that summary; Docker Pro, Team, and Business subscriptions include commercial use. Terms can change, so organizations should review Docker’s current installation and licensing guidance and Subscription Service Agreement before deployment.

Which Docker Desktop version is current?
Docker’s release notes list Docker Desktop 4.94.0, released October 5, 2026, with separate Mac downloads for Apple silicon and Intel. Docker says releases roll out gradually, so a release can take up to a week to become available to a given user. Check the Docker Desktop release notes and download page for the version currently offered to you.
