You do not need to master every system before you begin. Start with the tutorial, learn the immediate objective and the few controls needed to act, and give yourself permission to use an easier setting if the game offers one. Treat the first session as practice, not a performance test.
What should you learn first?
Focus on what lets you take the next useful action: the goal of the scenario, the current tutorial objective, and how to pause or review instructions. Leave advanced builds, optimization, and unfamiliar interface panels for later.
One beginner put the feeling plainly: “I’d like to learn this game but it feels so massive, what are the basics I shuold concentrate in first?” The useful answer is to shrink the task. Pick one action chain—such as gathering a resource and using it—or complete one tutorial objective before taking on anything else.
Use the tutorial as your first guide
A built-in tutorial or beginner guide is a sensible starting point because it introduces the game on its own terms. For example, the Against the Storm tutorial walkthrough explains what the tutorial expects and why. It is intended to clarify the tutorial, not teach an optimized strategy, and directs readers to other material once the basics make sense.

The walkthrough is for version 1.0, while the game has since reached version 1.11.2; some details may have changed. Use it as context for understanding the tutorial, and check current in-game instructions when the two differ.
Lower the pressure if the game allows it
An easier difficulty or simpler scenario can leave more room to learn. Use the settings and descriptions in the game you are actually playing rather than copying a setup from another title: difficulty controls are not universal.

Example: Against the Storm
The Against the Storm beginner guide describes Settler as a lower-pressure difficulty than higher settings. Its table lists a 12-point victory target and villager food consumption 35% lower than on higher difficulties. Those are game-rule values from the wiki, not general advice about all strategy games. The guide was last updated during version 1.9.4 and warns that it may be out of date relative to version 1.11.2, so verify the current rules in-game.
Example: Stellaris
A community beginner guide for Stellaris describes a practice galaxy with AI empires and other threats removed. That can illustrate how a game-specific setup reduces pressure, but it is community guidance—not an official instruction or a setting to apply to other games.

A simple first-session plan
- Start the tutorial. Find the immediate objective and learn how to pause or review instructions.
- Reduce the stakes. If there is an easier difficulty or less demanding scenario, consider choosing it. Read the game’s own setting description before deciding.
- Choose one small goal. Complete a tutorial task or learn one basic action chain. Ignore advanced tactics and interface details that are not needed for that goal.
- Stop and review. Write down one thing that worked and one question you want to answer next time. A short note makes the next session easier to start.
- Return to the tutorial if needed. If the basics did not stick, replay or revisit the tutorial where the game allows it.
Use outside guides only for the question in front of you
Guides are most useful when they answer a specific question you have reached in play. The Stellaris beginner guide recommends proceeding step by step alongside the in-game tutorial. That is a better fit for a first session than reading advanced strategy from beginning to end.
For Against the Storm, the publisher’s FAQ says the tutorial can be replayed from the World Map, and notes that the game is complex enough that proficiency may take a few games. If the controls or objectives still feel unclear, resetting to the tutorial is a practical way to rebuild the basics—not evidence that you have failed.
