To prevent blisters in new hiking boots, start with a fit that holds your heel without squeezing your forefoot, wear the socks and insoles you plan to hike in, and break the boots in on short walks before adding distance or pack weight. Keep feet dry, check for grit or sock wrinkles, and treat any burning or tender spot right away. If rubbing persists after sensible adjustments, the boot’s size or shape may not suit your foot.
Get the fit right before the first hike
Fit is the most important place to start: a tight boot can create pressure, while a loose one lets your foot slide. Try boots with the hiking socks and insoles you intend to use. If your feet tend to swell during the day, try them on later in the day as well.
Look for a secure heel, room to wiggle your toes, and a forefoot that is not pinched. Walk around and notice any rubbing or pressure. REI’s hiking boot fit guidance recommends checking for heel movement, toe room, pinching, and friction rather than relying on a label size alone.
Adjust lacing without creating new pressure
Lace the boots snugly, not so tightly that they press into your foot, and keep the tongue and gussets straight. If you notice heel slip or pressure across the forefoot, try a lacing adjustment only if it improves the hold without causing another sore spot. Ongoing significant rubbing or pressure can mean the boot is the wrong size or model for your foot.

Break new boots in gradually
Wear the socks and insoles you plan to use on the trail from the start. Begin with short walks around town, then try short trail outings. Increase distance, trail difficulty, and pack weight gradually rather than asking your feet and boots to handle a long hike immediately. REI’s boot break-in guidance also cautions against soaking new boots as a quick fix; doing so can be hard on both boots and feet.
A tender spot or persistent pain during a test walk is a reason to stop and reassess, not a sign you should push through. Check the fit, sock, lacing, and boot shape before increasing your mileage.

Choose socks that fit the boot
Choose well-fitting synthetic or wool hiking socks rather than cotton. Cotton retains moisture, and excess moisture can make rubbing more likely. The sock should lie smooth against your foot without loose fabric that can bunch or slide.
Match thickness and cushioning to the boot’s volume: a thick sock can make a boot too tight, while a loose or thin sock may move around. A liner sock is something you can try, but it is not a reliable substitute for a well-fitting boot. REI’s hiking sock guidance notes that liner socks do not necessarily prevent blisters and that footwear fit matters most.

Keep feet dry and boots clear of grit
Wet skin and fabric can rub more readily. Carry a dry pair of socks for wet conditions or a long outing, and change if your socks become soaked. When you stop, check inside the boots for grit and smooth out any sock wrinkles before putting them back on. Keeping toenails trimmed can also reduce rubbing at the front of the boot.
Moisture management helps, but it cannot compensate for a boot that pinches, slips, or repeatedly rubs the same area.

Respond to a hot spot before it becomes a blister
Burning or tenderness is an early warning. Stop and take off your boots and socks instead of waiting for the pain to build.
- Dry the skin and check for grit, sock wrinkles, or a lacing problem.
- Correct the cause if you can, such as removing debris or smoothing the sock.
- Cover the hot spot with a product suitable for intact skin, such as medical tape or a blister bandage. Moleskin or padding can cushion an irritated area.
These supplies are optional protection for a known friction point or an emerging hot spot, not a fix for a poor boot fit. REI’s blister prevention guidance discusses early protection and foot care.

Care for a blister that has already formed
For an intact blister, Mayo Clinic advises draining fluid only when needed for pain relief and leaving the skin over it in place. Follow its blister first-aid instructions rather than improvising.
Get medical care if a blister develops spreading skin-color change, increasing pain, pus, or warmth, which may indicate infection. If you have diabetes, neuropathy, circulation problems, or another high-risk foot condition, seek individualized clinical advice about any foot wound.
Do not count on one product to prevent every blister
Blisters can depend on foot shape, boot construction and fit, trail conditions, and moisture. No sock, tape, or powder is established here as a guaranteed fix, and the cited sources do not provide a reliable percentage for how much any one product or method reduces blister risk. Choose boots and socks by how they fit and behave on your feet, then use gradual break-in and early hot-spot care to catch problems before they worsen.
