If you want a low-profile tracker for steps, sleep and everyday activity, a fitness band is the closest wrist-worn alternative to a smart ring. Choose a fitness watch if workouts, training guidance and GPS matter more; choose a general smartwatch if apps, calls, notifications and phone integration matter most. These are category tendencies, not guarantees: the right fit depends on your phone, activities, comfort and tolerance for charging.

Band, fitness watch or smartwatch: which fits your priorities?

A ring keeps your wrist free, while a band or watch gives you a display and easier access to workout controls and notifications. The bigger screen and added interaction can be useful, but they may also mean a bulkier device and more frequent charging. Decide first whether you want unobtrusive tracking, deeper exercise features or a small extension of your phone.

Type Best fit Main tradeoff
Fitness band Low-profile daily tracking such as steps, heart rate and sleep Usually fewer training and communication features than a watch; GPS may depend on a paired phone
Fitness watch Workout tracking, training tools and, on some models, onboard GPS Typically larger than a band; general apps and communications may be less extensive than on a smartwatch
General smartwatch Apps, notifications, calls and close phone integration More frequent charging may be part of the tradeoff, depending on model and settings

When comparing options, list the features you actually use: sleep tracking, steps, heart rate, workouts, battery life, smart features, weight tracking or food logging. Those are the kinds of priorities raised in a Fitbit-alternatives discussion, but that thread is an example of reader language, not a representative survey: Reddit’s r/fitbit community.

Fitness bands for a low-profile daily tracker

Garmin vívosmart 5

The vívosmart 5 is a band-style option for people who want daily activity and wellness tracking without a full smartwatch. Garmin’s Singapore product page lists step, heart-rate and energy-level tracking, preloaded sports apps, interchangeable bands and a 5 ATM rating. Garmin states up to seven days in smartwatch mode; its specifications clarify that this figure excludes Pulse Ox sleep tracking. Runtime will depend on settings and use. See Garmin’s Singapore vívosmart 5 product page for the regional specifications.

The tradeoff is a monochrome screen and no onboard GPS, according to Tom’s Guide’s comparison. Location features may therefore depend on a connected phone. Tom’s Guide also reported that the band was comfortable for round-the-clock wear and performed well in its own sleep and fitness testing; that is a reviewer assessment, not proof of clinical accuracy. Tom’s Guide’s Fitbit alternatives comparison covers those observations.

Amazfit Band 7

The Amazfit Band 7 is another slim-band candidate cited in editorial comparison coverage. The available evidence supports considering it as a band-format alternative, but does not establish current stock, local pricing or compatibility in every market. Check those details with the seller and confirm that it supports your phone before buying. Tom’s Guide includes it in its Fitbit alternatives coverage.

Fitness watch or smartwatch: training depth versus phone features

Garmin Forerunner 165

The Forerunner 165 makes more sense if workout guidance and training functions take priority over broad smartwatch features. In its comparison with Apple Watch SE 3, Tom’s Guide characterizes Garmin as stronger for training tools and battery life, while noting fewer smartwatch features and communications than Apple. The review estimates up to 11 days of battery life for the Forerunner 165; treat that as a review-reported estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. See Tom’s Guide’s Forerunner 165 versus Apple Watch SE 3 comparison.

Apple Watch SE 3

The Apple Watch SE 3 is the stronger fit of these two when apps, connectivity, communications and integration with a phone matter more than longer intervals between charges. Tom’s Guide estimates roughly 18 hours in standard mode, compared with up to 11 days for the Forerunner 165 in its review. These are editorial estimates for the compared devices, not promises for every user or setting. Check that the watch is compatible with your phone and that the current model’s features meet your needs before purchasing; the comparison is at Tom’s Guide.

Check GPS, compatibility and charging before you choose

  • GPS: If you want to track a route without carrying your phone, verify that the specific model has onboard GPS. A tracker that relies on a phone for location will need the phone with you for those features.
  • Phone compatibility: Confirm support for your phone and the features you plan to use. Compatibility can determine whether notifications, calls, syncing and other connected functions work as expected.
  • Charging: Compare battery claims only when the named mode and conditions are clear. The vívosmart 5’s up-to-seven-day claim is for smartwatch mode and excludes Pulse Ox sleep tracking; review estimates for the Forerunner 165 and Apple Watch SE 3 are not guaranteed runtimes.
  • Wearing comfort: A band can be less conspicuous than a watch, but fit and comfort are personal. Consider whether you will wear it during sleep and workouts as well as during the day.
  • Smart functions: A training-oriented watch and a general smartwatch are not interchangeable just because both track activity. Decide whether workout tools or apps and communications will matter more in everyday use.

Wearable readings are for wellness, not diagnosis

Consumer wearables can provide activity and wellness information, but their readings should not be treated as a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice. Garmin states of the vívosmart 5: “This is not a medical device and is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition.” The statement appears on Garmin’s product page. The broader distinction between consumer monitoring and medical applications is discussed in a 2025 review in Sensors and Materials.
