A corded, temperature-controlled station is usually the practical choice for repeated soldering at a powered electronics bench. A cordless butane iron is a better fit when you need to work away from an outlet or a cord would obstruct the job. The right choice depends on where you work, how much thermal control the task needs, and whether carrying and refilling fuel is acceptable.

How the two types differ

A corded soldering station draws mains power and connects to a separate handpiece. It occupies bench space, but the setup suits stationary work where adjustable temperature and a stable tool holder are useful.

A cordless iron removes the power cord from the work area. The examples compared here use butane, so mobility comes with a fuel supply to manage. Runtime, temperature behavior, and available modes vary by model; specifications for one iron should not be treated as typical of all cordless tools.

Compare the options at a glance

Consideration Cordless butane iron Corded station
Best work setting Field repairs or jobs where mains power is unavailable or a cable would get in the way; this is an inference from the tool format and Weller product descriptions. A stable bench with mains power; this is an inference from the station format.
Power source Butane fuel; refill needs and model-specific runtime matter. Mains-powered station with a separate handpiece.
Temperature and functions Depend on the model and operating mode. Soldering-tip temperature is not interchangeable with hot-air or torch temperatures. The HAKKO FX-888DX example has a 50–480°C setting range; an optional 95 W handpiece is available for heavier work.
Ongoing needs Compatible butane and replacement tips; compatibility depends on the model. Suitable replacement tips and room for the station and holder.
Strongest fit Mobility is the priority and the expected runtime suits the job. Repeated bench work makes adjustable temperature and a stable setup priorities.

These recommendations follow the products’ stated formats and specifications; they are not the result of an independent head-to-head test.

T1 MAX will automatically restart to heat up to the temperature you set when picking it up again. NOTE: The red light flashes while heating, and the green light stays on when heating is complete.
  • 6 Temperature Levels: The tail knob of the soldering iron has 6 levels for adjusting the temperature. Can be adjusted accurately and efficiently for different work scenes in the range between 390°F to 840°F (200°C to 450°C) so as not to damage heat-resistant components.
  • Compact Structural with Stability: Equipped with an aluminum storage stand, the base tray can be pressed to pop up to store the welding head. The exquisite industrial design allows the soldering iron to be displayed on the table like an aesthetic piece, keeping the workbench clean, beautiful, comfortable, and pleasant.

When a cordless iron makes sense

Choose cordless when the work location matters more than having a fixed station: for example, a repair away from a mains outlet or a job where a trailing cord would interfere with access. Check the specific model’s runtime and refill requirements before relying on it for a long session.

Example: Weller WLBU75

Weller describes the WLBU75 as a 25–75 W butane-powered cordless iron and states that it can provide up to 60 minutes of continuous operation. That is a manufacturer claim for this named model, not a general runtime for cordless irons. Weller also lists replaceable tips and applications including electronics and PCB work. See the WLBU75 product specifications.

Another Weller tool illustrates why runtimes and temperatures should not be generalized across models. Weller describes the Pyropen Cordless Std as operating for approximately three hours per filling, with separate approximate ranges for soldering (200–500°C), hot air (up to 650°C), and torch operation (up to 1300°C). Those figures apply to that model and its modes, not to the WLBU75 or to cordless irons as a category. See Weller’s Pyropen Cordless Std details.

When a corded station makes sense

A station is a sensible starting point for a permanent bench with mains power, especially when you expect to solder regularly and want temperature adjustment at the station. Compare the range and stability conditions, the handpiece, and tip compatibility—not just a wattage figure. Wattage alone does not establish how well different iron designs will handle a particular joint.

Example: HAKKO FX-888DX

HAKKO lists the FX-888DX station at 100 W power consumption, with a 50–480°C setting range and a 65 W (26 V) handpiece connected by a 1.2 m cord. HAKKO states temperature stability of ±1°C at idle under its specified 200–480°C setting condition; that figure is conditional and should not be read as a guarantee for every operating state. The listed package includes the station, FX-8801 handpiece, iron holder with cleaning sponge and wire, and an instruction manual. See HAKKO’s FX-888DX specifications and package listing.

For heavier soldering, HAKKO says the FX-888DX can accept an optional 95 W soldering iron and names compatible handpieces. This is an optional accessory, not the power rating of the standard handpiece. Check the FX-888DX feature and compatibility information.

Choose by the job, not by the label

  • Work location: If you routinely work at a powered bench, a station avoids fuel management. If you need to move around or lack mains access, cordless operation may be worth the refill burden.
  • Thermal demands: Consider the size and thermal mass of the joint, the tip shape, and the iron’s temperature behavior. The specifications here do not establish that a particular wattage alone predicts performance.
  • Control needs: Check the adjustment range and the conditions attached to any stability figure. For multi-mode butane tools, verify soldering-mode specifications separately from hot-air and torch settings.
  • Session length: Match the model-specific runtime to the work and plan for compatible fuel where needed. Do not transfer a runtime claim from one model to another.
  • Parts and setup: Check replacement-tip availability and compatibility, what the package includes, and the bench space required for a station and holder.
  • Region and purchase details: Confirm regional voltage, current availability, and package contents for the exact version sold where you live.
