Choose waterproof hiking boots for sustained rain, wet brush, snow, or cold conditions when keeping outside moisture out matters most. Choose breathable, non-waterproof footwear for hot or humid weather, dry trails, or routes with frequent stream crossings, where ventilation and fast drying can matter more. Neither type is best for every hike: consider the route, temperature, water exposure, trip length, load, boot materials, and fit together.
Waterproof vs. breathable hiking boots: the trade-off
Waterproof boots typically use a waterproof/breathable membrane or liner beneath the upper. That barrier helps block rain and wet vegetation, but it also reduces ventilation compared with open mesh and can make footwear feel hotter, especially in warm weather. The added layer may also increase cost. REI’s 2026 tested hiking boot guide notes that the membrane may be unnecessary for hikers who avoid wet climates and winter use.
Non-waterproof footwear usually allows more airflow and dries more readily after getting wet. The trade-off is less protection from rain, damp vegetation, and snow. If water gets inside a waterproof boot—such as by spilling over the cuff during a crossing—the barrier can slow drying.
Which type should you choose?
| Hiking conditions | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent rain, wet brush, cold rain, or snow | Waterproof boots | A membrane can help keep moisture from outside out when the wetness is coming over the upper rather than over the cuff. |
| Hot or humid weather, dry trails, or feet that run hot | Breathable, non-waterproof footwear | More ventilation can help limit heat and sweat buildup. |
| Frequent full stream crossings | Quick-drying footwear or sandals, where conditions allow | Water can enter over the top of either boot; a waterproof barrier may then slow drying. |
| Mixed weather and terrain | Choose based on the more consequential risk on that route | Weigh prolonged outside wetness against heat and the possibility of slow drying after a crossing. |
Do you need waterproof hiking boots?
Not just because you are hiking. Waterproof boots make the most sense when the route is likely to expose the footwear to sustained rain, wet vegetation, or snow, and the expected moisture is primarily outside the boot. For water or snow that could enter over the cuff, boot height and gaiters may also matter; a membrane is not a guarantee against submersion or water entering from above.

For a dry route, warm forecast, or hiker who tends to overheat, a breathable option may be more comfortable. REI’s hiking footwear guidance says the choice also depends on hike duration and distance, terrain, and carried load—not only weather. See How to Choose Hiking Boots and Hiking Shoes.
Are waterproof hiking boots too hot for summer?
They can feel hotter than comparable mesh footwear because the membrane reduces ventilation. How noticeable that is depends on conditions and the individual hiker; the available guidance does not establish a universal temperature threshold. In hot or humid weather, especially on dry trails, breathable non-waterproof footwear is often the better starting point.

Should you wear waterproof boots for stream crossings?
For repeated crossings that submerge the footwear, waterproof boots are not necessarily the best choice. Water can flow in over the top, and once inside, the boot may dry more slowly than quick-drying footwear. REI recommends considering quick-drying footwear or sandals for full crossings. For a route with only occasional shallow crossings, weigh that risk against the chance of prolonged rain or wet brush elsewhere on the hike.
How upper materials affect the choice
Waterproofness is only one part of a boot’s construction. The upper material influences weight, durability, water resistance, and breathability:

- Synthetic and mesh combinations: generally lighter and quicker drying.
- Split-grain leather and mesh: more breathable, but less water resistant without added protection.
These are general material trade-offs, not guarantees for every model. Compare the particular boot’s construction, fit, and intended use rather than relying on the waterproof label alone.

A factory-applied durable water repellent (DWR) finish on the outer material wears away with use. REI says a sign it may need renewal is that water stops beading and consistently absorbs into the outer layer. Clean the footwear first, choose care products compatible with its leather or fabric-and-leather construction, follow the product directions, and dry it at normal temperature without direct heat. The membrane area needs cleaning, not an added topical treatment. Check the boot maker’s care instructions for the specific model.

A practical decision checklist
- How long will the footwear be exposed to rain, wet vegetation, or snow?
- Will the weather be hot or humid, and do your feet tend to run hot?
- Are there crossings deep enough to submerge the footwear?
- On a multi-day trip, how costly would slow drying be if water got inside?
- Does the upper’s weight, durability, water resistance, and breathability suit the terrain and load?
- Does the footwear fit well enough for the hike?
