Choose iPhone storage by checking how much space your current phone uses, then accounting for what you expect to keep on the next one: photos and videos, large apps, and offline downloads. On your current iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to review used space and the apps taking it up. Apple recommends checking your current device before moving to a lower-capacity model, but it does not publish one storage tier as right for everyone.

Start with your current iPhone’s storage use

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Note the amount of space used and review the categories and largest apps.
  3. Identify what accounts for your usage: photos and videos, apps, music, downloaded shows or other files.
  4. Decide which of those items you want available on the phone without relying on a network connection.

Apple’s guidance for moving to a lower-capacity device recommends checking the current phone first. Used space is a starting point, not a forecast: the next phone may accumulate more or less data depending on how you use it and how long you keep it.

Compare the available capacities for the exact model

Storage choices vary by iPhone model. For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications list 256GB and 512GB. That example does not establish the options for other models, so check the specifications for the exact phone and region you plan to buy.

For each available tier, compare its capacity with your current used space and allow for the content you expect to add before upgrading again. Also compare the actual prices for that model in your market; the price difference varies, and no fixed premium applies across models or regions.

Decide what needs to stay on the phone

Built-in storage is most important when you want photos, videos, apps, music, and downloads stored locally. Keeping more content available offline can be useful while traveling or when internet access is unreliable. If you routinely remove downloads or keep a smaller local photo library, your needs may be different.

Consider how your habits could change: taking more video, installing larger apps, or keeping more offline media all increase the amount of on-device room you use. There is no universal growth rate to apply, so use your own patterns rather than treating today’s used-space total as a precise prediction.

Understand what iCloud can—and cannot—do

iCloud storage and built-in iPhone storage are separate. iCloud holds synced or backed-up information in the cloud; it does not add capacity to the phone. Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud storage when a user signs up, but that is cloud storage, not an iPhone capacity tier. See Apple’s explanation of iCloud and device storage.

With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the iPhone as needed. Apple notes that photos and videos in iCloud Photos use both iCloud and device storage. The feature requires enough iCloud capacity, and fetching originals that are not stored locally requires network access. It can reduce local photo-library use, but it does not turn iCloud space into built-in storage.

Be careful when deleting photos while iCloud Photos is on: deleting an item removes it across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. To free space, Apple also suggests reviewing app use, removing content you no longer need, transferring media to a computer, or using iCloud options where appropriate. Its photo and video storage guidance explains these options.

Account for ProRes video separately

If you record ProRes, storage has a more demanding profile than routine video capture. Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files; that is an upper comparison, not a per-minute estimate. Apple also requires at least 10 percent of device storage to be free to record ProRes. Check Apple’s ProRes guidance and the recording capabilities of the specific model before choosing a tier.

Supported iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro models can record ProRes directly to a USB-C external storage device. For ProRes 4K60, Apple specifies a drive that supports at least 220MB/s; for 4K120, at least 440MB/s. Apple also specifies a maximum power draw of 4.5W for these recording modes. External recording may suit a particular video workflow, but an external drive does not increase built-in capacity and is not a general substitute for choosing enough phone storage.

A practical way to choose between two tiers

  • Lean toward the lower tier if your current use is comfortably below it, you expect similar habits, and you are willing to manage downloads or use cloud features where suitable.
  • Consider the higher tier if your current use is already near the lower option, you plan to keep more media offline, or your photo, app, or video use is likely to grow.
  • For ProRes workflows, verify the exact model’s recording options and free-space requirement; consider external recording only if the supported-device and drive requirements fit your workflow.

These are decision checks, not a claim that one capacity suits most buyers. The right choice depends on your current use, what you want stored locally, how long you intend to keep the phone, and the options offered for that model.
