You can swap tokens on NEAR without depositing them with a centralized exchange: use a supported NEAR decentralized exchange (DEX) for assets already on NEAR, or use NEAR Intents for a supported cross-chain route. In either case, check the exact assets, network, quote, fees, and execution terms in the live interface before signing. A decentralized route keeps you in control of your wallet, but it does not remove smart-contract, bridge, solver, or token risks.
Choose a NEAR-native or cross-chain route

For wallets, start with the NEAR wallet directory, which now describes itself as a gateway to the broader wallet ecosystem rather than simply the former web wallet. Ref Finance is one NEAR ecosystem swap option, but its current pair availability and interface instructions should be checked directly in its live interface; do not assume a particular token pair is available.
NEAR Intents documents a quote-and-sign process for swaps and a deposit route for supported cross-chain assets. Its official site displayed a claim of more than $33 billion in all-time volume across 35 chains on October 7, 2026. That changing, service-reported aggregate does not establish liquidity, safety, or expected execution for an individual trade.
How to swap tokens already on NEAR
- Open a current NEAR-compatible wallet. Use the wallet’s own interface and confirm you are connected to the intended account.
- Choose a supported NEAR DEX interface. Select the exact input and output assets. Verify the network and asset identity in the wallet or interface; matching ticker symbols alone are not enough.
- Review the live quote. Check the amount you will send, estimated amount received, fees, and any slippage or execution terms the interface displays. There is no universal fee or output figure for all pairs and times.
- Approve only after reviewing the transaction. Confirm the details in the wallet prompt before signing, then check the resulting balances and transaction status in the interface.
How to swap a cross-chain asset with NEAR Intents
The NEAR documentation describes a sequence of requesting a quote, inspecting it, signing an intent with the NEAR account key, and publishing the signed intent. A consumer interface may present these steps through ordinary wallet prompts. Follow the current interface rather than copying code examples, demonstration signatures, or addresses from developer documentation.

- Check route and asset support. Confirm that the exact source asset, source chain, destination asset, and destination chain are supported. NEAR Intents examples such as
nep141:wrap.nearandnep141:eth.omft.nearillustrate identifiers; they do not guarantee present availability. - Request a quote. The documented flow can estimate output for an exact input amount or calculate the input for an exact output amount. Verify both assets, networks, amounts, and any expiry or execution conditions shown.
- Review the quote before signing. Compare the expected received amount, route, network costs, service or route fees, and execution terms. Quotes can change or expire before execution, and the interface’s displayed estimate is not a guaranteed final result.
- Sign and publish through the wallet interface. Check the intent details in the wallet prompt. A signature authorizes an action; never share a seed phrase or private key with a website, support contact, or purported solver.
- Check the result. Wait for the interface to report completion and verify the resulting asset and amount in the appropriate wallet or account view.
Deposit a cross-chain asset before swapping
If the asset is not already available on the route, a deposit may be required first. NEAR’s deposit documentation says supported external-chain deposits and withdrawals use Omni-Bridge. The Intents Bridge documentation also describes a PoA Bridge alternative for some assets. These are route dependencies, not a claim that every asset or chain is supported.
- Check current support for the asset and source chain. Do this in the live interface and current documentation before sending anything.
- Generate the deposit details for your own account. Confirm the source chain and asset match the transfer. Deposit addresses are account-specific; never use an example address from documentation.
- Send only the supported asset on the specified network. A wrong-chain or unsupported-token transfer may not be recoverable.
- Wait for confirmation and verify the deposit appears. Proceed with the swap only after the interface reflects the funds.
What can go wrong, and how to reduce the risk
- Stale or unfillable quote: Check quote expiry and execution conditions, and compare the final transaction prompt with the quote before signing.
- Wrong token or network: Verify the exact asset and chain, not just its name or ticker. Token names and symbols can be ambiguous.
- Bridge or solver dependency: Cross-chain routes add supported-asset and bridge requirements; execution may also depend on the route’s solver. A DEX swap and a cross-chain Intents swap are not necessarily one on-chain trade.
- Wallet-signature risk: Read the wallet prompt and sign only the action you intended. Never disclose recovery words or private keys.
- Token and contract risk: A wallet-based swap does not make a token safe or protect against bugs or malicious contracts. This guide is not a recommendation to buy or hold any asset.
NEAR Intents’ website uses promotional descriptions of its service, but those do not guarantee a particular trade’s settlement time, fees, or safety. The NEAR documentation explains the intended quote, signing, and deposit flows; the actual route and terms are live interface details.

Is a hardware wallet required?
No. A hardware wallet is an optional way to manage signing keys; it does not execute or guarantee a swap. Ledger’s NEAR wallet page describes supported devices and notes that swap and related transaction services are provided by third parties, with availability that may vary by jurisdiction. Check local availability and the specific service terms before relying on it.

- Choose a NEAR DEX route when both assets are available on NEAR and the current interface supports the pair you want.
- Consider NEAR Intents when you need a supported cross-chain route and are prepared to check any required deposit and bridge details.
- For either route, make the decision using the live quoted output, fees, execution terms, and transaction details—not a general fee or slippage claim.
