For demanding 4K gaming, 16 GB of VRAM is a sensible target if your budget allows. Twelve gigabytes can be enough for some 4K games and presets, but it is not a guarantee—especially if you want demanding ray tracing. The right amount depends on the game, graphics settings, target frame rate, and the graphics card’s processing performance.
How much VRAM should you target for 4K?
Use 16 GB as a prudent buying target for demanding 4K play, particularly at high settings or with ray tracing. Consider 12 GB a workable floor for some 4K presets, not a universal minimum or promise of smooth performance. No single VRAM capacity guarantees good results across every game.
A useful illustration comes from CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements for Cyberpunk 2077. For the base game and Phantom Liberty from Update 2.0 onward, the publisher lists 12 GB of VRAM for its 2160p Ultra tier, with an expected 60 FPS. Its 2160p ray-tracing Overdrive tier lists 16 GB, also with an expected 60 FPS; that Overdrive figure assumes DLSS Frame Generation is switched on. These are requirements for named configurations in one game, not universal 4K thresholds. See CD PROJEKT RED’s current system requirements.
Why do 4K settings change VRAM needs?
Resolution and graphics quality
Higher resolutions and more demanding graphics settings can change the memory a game needs. Texture and quality settings matter, so a card that handles one 4K preset may need settings adjustments in another game. Check requirements and performance for the exact games and presets you intend to use rather than treating “4K” as one fixed workload.

Ray tracing
Ray tracing can raise the hardware demands of a game. The Cyberpunk 2077 figures show the distinction clearly: its listed 2160p Overdrive configuration calls for more VRAM than its 2160p Ultra tier without that ray-tracing preset. That comparison applies to this game’s stated configurations; it does not establish a fixed extra amount of memory for ray tracing in every title.
Upscaling and frame generation
Upscaling and frame-generation settings are part of the configuration, not details to ignore when comparing requirements. CD PROJEKT RED specifically says its 2160p Overdrive requirement was measured with DLSS Frame Generation enabled. A result or requirement that assumes a particular feature may not describe performance with that feature turned off.

VRAM capacity does not determine performance by itself
VRAM is only one part of a graphics card. A card with more memory is not automatically fast enough to deliver your target frame rate at 4K. Compare independent performance results for your games and resolution, along with the settings and ray-tracing level used in those tests.
When evaluating a card, consider these factors together:

What do current graphics-card examples show?
NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 RTX 50 Series announcement gives examples of desktop cards at both capacities: the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti have 16 GB of GDDR7, while the RTX 5070 has 12 GB of GDDR7. These specifications illustrate available capacity choices; they do not prove that cards with the same VRAM deliver the same frame rate.
The announcement describes its RTX 5080 examples at 4K with full ray tracing and maximum settings, but describes RTX 5070 Ti examples at 2560×1440. Those different resolutions and conditions make the examples unsuitable as a direct performance comparison. How to choose a card for your 4K setup
- List your games and target settings. Note whether you want high or maximum settings, ray tracing, and a particular frame rate.
- Check game-specific requirements. Match the stated resolution and preset, and note any assumptions about upscaling or frame generation. Requirements can change with game updates.
- Compare independent 4K performance results. VRAM capacity alone cannot tell you whether a card can meet your frame-rate target.
- Choose capacity in context. Favor 16 GB for demanding 4K play if affordable; consider 12 GB only with the understanding that suitability depends on the titles and settings you use.
- Compare local prices and availability. The examples above do not establish current value or availability in your region.
Do not mistake general memory advice for a VRAM requirement
The Hogwarts Legacy PC Features FAQ says the game renders at native 4K and advises at least 16 GB of memory, while also noting that graphics adjustments can affect VRAM. It does not identify that 16 GB figure as GPU VRAM, so it should not be treated as proof that the game requires a 16 GB graphics card. See the Hogwarts Legacy PC Features FAQ.
