For a normal disc removal, press the physical eject button on your PS5. If the disc will not come out, do not pull it or open the console while it is powered: Sony’s manual-eject procedure requires shutting down and unplugging the console first.
How to eject a disc normally
- Locate the physical eject button on the PS5 console.
- Press the button once. Sony’s PS5 quick-start guide instructs users to press the eject button to eject the disc.
- Wait for the disc to come out, then remove it by its edges.
This applies only to a PS5 with a disc drive installed. Sony’s button-function information distinguishes disc-drive models from the Digital Edition; if your console has no disc drive, it cannot eject a disc. For compatible newer models, the drive may be installed separately, so confirm your console’s model and hardware before following disc-drive instructions.
If the disc is stuck inside
Use manual removal only when the physical eject button does not work. It requires removing the console cover and turning an internal manual-eject screw. Sony’s exact cover-removal steps and orientation vary by PS5 model, so follow the instructions for your specific console rather than applying one model’s steps to another.
- Hold the console’s power button for three seconds to turn it off. Disconnect all cables and devices.
- Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface. Remove the base or stand as directed for your model.
- Remove the appropriate cover following Sony’s model-specific instructions. Some newer consoles may not have the black plastic film shown in instructions covering access to the screw.
- Use a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver to turn the manual-eject screw clockwise until the disc is almost completely visible.
- Gently remove the disc. Do not forcibly pull it from the drive.
- Replace the cover before reconnecting the cables or turning on the console.
Keep the PS5 powered off while the cover is removed; Sony warns not to turn on or play on the console in that condition. The detailed Sony manual disc-eject instructions include the procedure and model-specific cover guidance.

If the disc ejects but will not read
A disc that comes out normally but is not recognized is a reading problem, not a stuck-disc problem. Sony recommends cleaning dirt or fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth, then testing another supported game, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD. Follow Sony’s disc-reading troubleshooting steps. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact PlayStation Repairs.
