If your Seagate One Touch drive is missing, first check its power and cable, then find out whether Windows or macOS detects the physical disk. A drive that is detected but has no visible volume needs different—and potentially safer—steps than one the computer cannot detect at all. If files on the drive matter, do not initialize or format it when it appears as RAW, unallocated, or uninitialized.

Start with the connection and power

Check the simplest causes before changing disk settings. Seagate’s One Touch manual FAQ asks, “Are both ends of the USB cable firmly attached?” Disconnect and reconnect both ends, and confirm that the computer and drive are powered on. Then try a different computer port, a compatible known-good cable, and—if one is in use—a direct connection that bypasses a hub or adapter. Testing the drive on another computer can help distinguish a drive problem from a port, cable, adapter, or host issue.

Use a cable compatible with your exact One Touch model; connector types are not universal. Seagate recommends the supplied cable for best results in its documented One Touch HDD desktop manual.

Some connection details apply only to specific models. For the documented One Touch HDD desktop version, Seagate says the volume may take 30 seconds or more to appear. Its computer USB-C port must provide at least 15 W; the manual says the drive’s status LED flashes red quickly when the host port does not supply that minimum. Do not apply that power requirement or LED interpretation to other One Touch models. Seagate’s manual FAQ also asks, “Is the LED flashing red?” Check the manual for your exact model before interpreting its light.

Find out whether the computer detects the drive

The key distinction is whether the operating system sees the physical disk, even if it does not show a usable volume. Check the system’s disk utility before assuming the drive has failed.

On Windows

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Disk drives and look for the Seagate drive.
  3. Open Disk Management and locate the corresponding disk. Check whether it has a volume and a drive letter, or is shown as RAW, unallocated, or uninitialized. Do not accept an initialize or format prompt if you need the files.

If the drive appears in Device Manager but not as an accessible volume in File Explorer, Windows detects the hardware; the next issue to investigate is the volume or its file system, not simply whether the USB connection exists.

On macOS

  1. Open Disk Utility. On supported macOS versions, choose View > Show All Devices to display physical disks as well as volumes.
  2. If the physical disk appears but its volume is not mounted, select the volume and try Mount.
  3. If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility, open System Information and check the relevant hardware section, such as USB.

If the drive is absent from both Disk Utility and System Information, Seagate advises trying it on another Mac. If it is detected but its volume is inaccessible, treat that as a volume or file-system problem rather than proof that the physical disk is dead.

Choose the next step based on what you see

What the computer shows What to do next
The drive is absent from the system’s disk and hardware tools Retry a direct connection, another compatible cable and port, and another computer. If it remains undetected across computers, contact Seagate Support.
The physical disk appears, but the volume is missing or not mounted Check the volume’s state in Disk Management or Disk Utility. On macOS, try mounting a listed volume. Avoid initializing or formatting if the files matter.
The disk appears as RAW, unallocated, or uninitialized Do not format or initialize it if you need its data. A locked One Touch with Hub has a specific exception described below; otherwise, consider recovery before destructive changes.
The drive is detected and the files are not needed Formatting may be an acceptable reset if you understand that it erases the data. Use the operating system’s format option only after deciding the files can be lost.

Protect files on a RAW, unallocated, or inaccessible drive

These states can indicate a file-system or formatting problem, but they do not by themselves establish what happened or prove that the data is unrecoverable. Seagate warns that formatting erases data. If the files matter, do not initialize or format the disk. Seagate recommends considering data recovery if trying another port, cable, and computer does not resolve the issue.

On macOS, Seagate describes using Disk Utility’s First Aid to check or repair a drive. If the drive holds the only copy of important files, weigh that repair attempt carefully: preserving the data and seeking professional recovery may be preferable to making changes to the disk.

Special case: a locked One Touch with Hub

Seagate documents a situation affecting security-enabled One Touch with Hub drives of 12 TB or higher: while locked, the drive can appear uninitialized or unallocated. That display does not mean you should initialize it. Open Seagate Toolkit and enter the drive’s password to unlock it. If macOS prompts you to initialize the disk, choose Ignore while you unlock it through Toolkit.

Do you need a Seagate driver?

Usually, no. Seagate says modern operating systems include built-in drivers for USB external hard drives and SSDs, and that it does not provide product-specific drivers for them. Its general troubleshooting guidance also says bundled backup software is typically not required for the drive itself to function. Installing backup software or looking for a model-specific driver is therefore not the first troubleshooting step.

When to stop troubleshooting and get help

  • If the drive remains undetected after trying another compatible cable, port, and computer, contact Seagate Support. Persistent blinking or a changed LED pattern may signal a larger problem, but meanings vary by model and do not by themselves diagnose a failed drive.
  • If the disk is RAW or unallocated and the files matter, consider a professional data recovery service before formatting or repeating repair attempts.
  • If you have confirmed that the data can be erased, formatting can be a reset option—but it is destructive, not a first-line visibility fix.
