No packing method can guarantee that a model will arrive completely intact. For a delicate build, moving vulnerable sections separately is often a safer compromise than transporting every piece assembled.
Choose whether to move the set assembled
The right approach depends on how the model is built and how it will be handled. Moving guidance differs: some recommends disassembly as the safer option for many sets, while advice for keeping a model assembled focuses on protecting fragile features and preventing movement inside its container.
- Build stability: Check whether the model twists, flexes, or sheds pieces when lifted.
- Fragile details: Tall, thin, loose, or projecting parts are more likely to catch on packing material or break under pressure.
- Handling and route: Consider stairs, carrying distance, vehicle space, and how much the packed set may shift. The available guidance does not quantify the effect of these factors.
- Time to restore: Consider whether you have the instructions and time to rebuild removed sections.
If the model is spindly or has many fragile details, remove its most vulnerable sections or transport stable modules separately. If it is sturdy and needs to remain assembled, protect it from sliding and keep pressure off delicate features. These are practical risk-reduction measures, not guarantees backed by controlled comparisons.
Pack the model step by step
- Inspect the build. Identify loose, thin, tall, or projecting pieces, along with sections that could flex when the model is lifted.
- Photograph it from several angles. Include close-ups of complicated details so you have a visual reference if anything comes loose.
- Remove vulnerable parts. Take off fragile or snag-prone elements and place them in a resealable bag. If a larger section comes off as a stable module, consider packing it separately.
- Choose a container with room for cushioning. Use a box or lidded tote large enough to fit the model with padding around it. One moving guide recommends leaving 2–3 inches of space around the set; that is a practical suggestion from that guide, not a universal standard.
- Limit movement without crushing the build. Cushion the gaps so the model cannot slide, but do not push padding hard against delicate pieces. Stretch wrap may help stabilize an assembled model, but use gentle tension: tight wrapping can force sections to flex, and wrap alone is not impact protection.
- Label the set and its parts. Identify the container and any bags of removed pieces so they stay with the correct model.
- Keep it dry and out of heat and direct sunlight. The LEGO Group says temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. See its storage guidance.
Should you use glue?
No. The LEGO Group says it does not think it is a good idea to use any type of glue on LEGO bricks. Glue can alter brick shape and interfere with reusing the pieces. Use careful packing and removable stabilization rather than bonding parts together. See LEGO’s guidance on glue.
