6G FR3 is a commonly used name for a prospective upper-mid-band spectrum range, typically 7.125–24.25 GHz. It sits above the 5G range called FR1 and below FR2, but it is not a finalized global allocation: candidate frequencies, standards, and national authorizations are still developing.

What does FR3 mean?

FR3 is a label for a frequency range being considered for future mobile systems, especially 6G. It describes spectrum—not a separate network generation, a consumer product, or a promise that every 6G network will use the same frequencies.

The commonly cited candidate span is 7.125–24.25 GHz. The Swedish Institute of International Affairs identifies that interval as upper-mid-band spectrum discussed for FR3 in a 2025 brief (Swedish Institute of International Affairs).

Where does FR3 sit relative to 5G FR1 and FR2?

In the frequency plan described by a 2025 Rohde & Schwarz technical white paper, FR3 would occupy the space between the 5G ranges FR1 and FR2:

Range Frequency span How it relates
FR1 410 MHz–7.125 GHz Lower frequency range, often described as sub-7 GHz.
Candidate FR3 7.125–24.25 GHz Prospective upper-mid-band range being considered for future systems; not a uniform, established allocation.
FR2 24.25–71 GHz Higher range; the cited paper divides it into FR2-1 (24.25–52.6 GHz) and FR2-2 (52.6–71 GHz).

The FR1 and FR2 boundaries above come from Rohde & Schwarz’s 2025 paper (Rohde & Schwarz). These range labels help compare frequency positions; they do not mean the entire candidate FR3 interval is available for mobile use.

Why is FR3 being considered for 6G?

FR3 may offer a compromise between the lower frequencies commonly used in FR1 and the higher frequencies in FR2. At a higher frequency than FR1, it may offer access to more bandwidth in some locations. At a lower frequency than FR2, propagation and coverage could be less challenging than in higher millimeter-wave bands, all else equal.

That is an engineering rationale, not evidence of measured 6G coverage or consumer speeds. Real-world capacity and coverage would also depend on available channel bandwidth, radio design, antennas, transmission-power limits, network density, and the protections required for incumbent spectrum users. The Swedish Institute notes that prospective FR3 spectrum may be non-contiguous, creating coexistence and radio-implementation challenges (Swedish Institute of International Affairs).

Is FR3 allocated for 6G worldwide?

No settled worldwide FR3 assignment is established. The 7.125–24.25 GHz description is broad shorthand for a candidate range; portions may be unavailable, shared, or subject to different rules from one country to another. Existing services must be protected or coordinated, and gaps between usable blocks could complicate network and device design.

International spectrum decisions are reflected in the ITU Radio Regulations, while national regulators implement spectrum policy within their jurisdictions. For example, Ofcom’s UK materials discuss potential sharing between mobile and Wi-Fi users in Upper 6 GHz, at 6.425–7.125 GHz—adjacent to, but below, the commonly cited FR3 lower edge. That example illustrates jurisdiction-specific spectrum decisions; it does not establish an FR3 allocation (Ofcom).

How far along are 6G standards?

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls the 6G framework IMT-2030. The framework was published in December 2023. The ITU says candidate radio-interface technology proposals are expected for consideration in early 2027, with final standards potentially approved by 2030. These are standards milestones, not guaranteed dates for commercial service or nationwide coverage (ITU; page last updated August 2024).

What FR3 does—and does not—tell you

  • It indicates a frequency position: a candidate range above FR1 and below FR2 in the cited plan.
  • It suggests a possible capacity-and-coverage trade-off: a potential, not a proven service outcome.
  • It does not establish a universal band plan: usable spectrum may be fragmented and vary by country.
  • It does not tell you a phone’s compatibility, a network’s speed, or a launch date: those depend on later standards, regulation, equipment, and deployment choices.
