Buy used IKEA furniture only after you have identified the exact item, checked its condition and recall status, and confirmed the sale terms. IKEA-operated As-Is stock in the United States is inspected for resale suitability; a private listing does not come with that IKEA inspection or its policies. Either way, inspect the specific piece before use.
Use this checklist before you commit
- Identify the item. Ask for the product name and, if available, its label, product number, or original documentation. Match the dimensions, configuration, finish, and included components to the listing. - Inspect the actual furniture. Compare it with current photos and the seller’s description. Check stability, frame and joints, doors or drawers, moving parts, and included hardware. Look for cracks, looseness, water damage, heavy wear, missing parts, or changes that were not disclosed. These are practical checks, not a published IKEA inspection checklist. - Check the current recall list. Use IKEA’s recall page for the product category and country where you are buying. If the item is recalled, do not buy it for use. IKEA instructs owners to stop using recalled products immediately and provides return instructions. IKEA U.S. recalls
- Verify wall-attachment hardware. For a tall unit or furniture designed to attach to a wall, ask whether the correct attachment hardware is present and suitable for the unit and installation surface. IKEA U.S. says its As-Is listings provide the correct Secure It kit for units requiring wall attachment. Do not assume a generic strap or kit is compatible. IKEA U.S. As-Is FAQ
- Agree on the transaction before paying. Confirm whether the sale is final, what return or dispute rights apply, which payment method will be used, and who is responsible for pickup or delivery. Protections offered by IKEA or a marketplace do not automatically cover an outside private sale.
- Plan collection. Check assembled dimensions, stairs and doorways, vehicle capacity, whether disassembly is needed, and who will load the item. Agree on the arrangements before traveling.
Choose a sales channel with its limits in mind
IKEA U.S. As-Is
IKEA U.S. describes As-Is Online and in-store As-Is departments. Stock may include discontinued items, gently used furniture, showroom displays, new old stock, and other returned or sold-back products that passed IKEA’s resale inspection. Store inventory changes daily. That inspection is useful, but it does not replace checking the particular item or its recall status. IKEA U.S. second-hand and resale information
For As-Is Online, IKEA says customers sign into an IKEA Family account, select a store, review listing photos and defect comments, reserve the item, then inspect it and review safety information at collection before paying at checkout. A reservation lasts 48 hours. You can decline the purchase if the in-store assessment or price is unsatisfactory. Private sellers and other marketplaces
A person-to-person listing may offer models that are not in IKEA’s local As-Is stock, but verification and buyer protection depend on the platform and local rules. Ask for recent photos of the actual piece, get the condition and missing components stated in writing, and inspect before completing the sale where practical. Do not assume IKEA inspected it or that IKEA’s recall-return process applies to your purchase.

Marketplace terms can be narrowly defined. For example, IKEA UK’s Marketplace Buyer Protection policy, effective September 16, 2026, covers qualifying purchases made through that marketplace, asks buyers to inspect at pickup, and allows a refund request within 48 hours after accepting an item that significantly differs from its listing. It describes a 5% buyer-protection fee for covered purchases and excludes free products and transactions arranged outside the marketplace. What to do if the item may be recalled
IKEA U.S. provides a live recall lookup and says proof of purchase is not required to return a recalled product. Its guidance says to stop using a recalled product immediately; if it requires power, disconnect it as an extra precaution. For a dresser or another tall unit, check both recall status and the manufacturer’s wall-attachment instructions before use. IKEA’s U.S. recall FAQ warns: “Please immediately stop using any recalled chest or dresser that is not properly anchored to the wall and place in an area not accessible to children.” An anchor does not make a recalled item safe to use. Why buyback eligibility is not a guarantee about every used item
IKEA U.S. Buy Back & Resell terms effective October 26, 2022 name KALLAX shelf units, BILLY bookcases, ALEX drawer units, MICKE desks, and BESTÅ storage combinations among eligible products at participating locations. The terms require items to be fully assembled and functional, structurally sound, safe, resalable, and unmodified. They exclude, among other categories, chests of drawers, upholstered furniture, beds, and mattresses, as well as modified, painted, or recalled pieces. Eligibility differs by country. IKEA UK describes a broader set of buyback categories and requires furniture to be clean, unmodified, complete, assembled, functional, and recognizable as IKEA products. Do not apply one country’s list to another. IKEA UK buyback guidance
