Identify the IKEA item and its surface before cleaning or restoring it. For routine dust and light soil, use a soft cloth; use a cloth dampened with water and mild soap or detergent only if the item’s care instructions allow it, then dry the surface. Avoid abrasives, and do not assume sanding, oil, paint, or stain is suitable for an unidentified finish.
Identify the furniture and its finish first
IKEA care instructions vary by product and material. Look for the product label, identify the model from its shape and product information, and find its assembly or care instructions before choosing a cleaner or restoration method. IKEA’s care and repair guidance encourages maintaining and refreshing furniture, but it does not specify a finish or preparation method for an unidentified item.
Inspect the piece for loose or missing hardware, damaged edges, bubbling, peeling, and signs of water exposure. These observations can help you decide whether routine cleaning is appropriate or whether repair is needed; they do not identify the surface material by themselves.
How to clean second-hand IKEA furniture
1. Remove loose dust
Use a soft or microfiber cloth and gentle movements. IKEA Turkey’s furniture-cleaning article, dated March 7, 2025, recommends soft cloths and cautions against abrasive products. See IKEA Turkey’s cleaning guidance.

2. Wipe with mild soap only when permitted
If the product’s instructions allow it, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water and mild soap or detergent. Do not saturate the furniture. IKEA’s instructions for the FARDAL door specify a mild soap solution and soft cloth for that product; they also say to avoid alcohol-containing and abrasive cleaners. Those warnings are specific to FARDAL, so check the instructions for your own item rather than treating them as universal rules.
3. Dry the surface
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning. IKEA’s furniture-cleaning advice specifically recommends drying wood surfaces. Follow any more specific directions supplied with the product.

4. Stop if the finish reacts
As a cautious step, try a permitted cleaning method on an inconspicuous spot first. If the finish transfers, swells, turns cloudy, or lifts, stop. Do not escalate to a stronger cleaner or abrasive: there is no universal chemical treatment for an unidentified IKEA finish.

For a loose or missing part, look for an IKEA replacement before attempting a cosmetic fix. IKEA UK lists spare parts and care-and-repair resources; availability depends on the product and location. For a cosmetic refresh, IKEA’s general advice says wood furniture may be painted or stained, but it does not establish which finish is right for a particular used piece.

Be especially cautious about sanding and oiling. IKEA Netherlands’ advice applies to wood veneer worktops when they become dry and light in color. It is not a general instruction for IKEA furniture, and it should not be applied to laminate, foil, or paper finishes. Confirm the material and the product’s care directions before proceeding.
