Start with the item’s attached label or type plate: record its name and identifiers, look up the product name or article number on IKEA’s official site, and compare the listing and assembly documents with the item. This can help identify the model, but IKEA’s published guidance does not describe a universal test that proves every secondhand item is genuine.
How to identify a used IKEA item
- Photograph the item and its markings. Take a full-item photo and close-ups of every label, plate, or stamp before moving or taking it apart. Check less visible surfaces: IKEA Germany says a five-digit manufacturer code is usually on a type plate or label attached to the product, with examples under a chair or on the back of a cabinet. - Transcribe each identifier exactly. Write down the product name, article or item number, manufacturer code, serial number, date marking, and any country or manufacturing details shown. Not every item will have every field.
- Search IKEA’s official site. Search by the product name or article number. IKEA Austria says the article number appears below the product name or in the product details on a product page; it can help locate the item for ordering, complaints, or store inquiries. - Compare product documents with the physical item. IKEA Ireland says assembly instructions can be found from a product page, or by searching by name or article number and opening Product details and Assembly and documents. Compare the diagrams, overall form, parts, and configuration with the used item. IKEA Ireland: assembly instructions.
- Check recalls after narrowing down the model. Look at the IKEA recall information for the country where the item is being used or sold, then follow the notice’s specific instructions. IKEA provides current and past recall information; some notices identify affected items using particular date codes or physical features, which should not be applied to other models. - Ask IKEA if the match remains uncertain. Contact customer support or the product-safety channel for the relevant country with clear photos and all identifiers you found. For safety reports, IKEA Germany asks for the item name, item number, purchase date if known, date stamp if available, and five-digit manufacturer code. IKEA Germany: product safety information.
Where to find the model number and product label
There is no single label location established for every IKEA product. Inspect the underside, back, interior, and other surfaces where a product label or type plate could be attached. IKEA Germany gives under a chair and the back of a cabinet as examples, not as a complete placement guide.
For an appliance, check its rating plate. IKEA US says the manufacturer name, model, and serial number appear there, usually inside the appliance. Use those details for a product-support or parts inquiry; if the labeling is unclear, confirm with IKEA or the appliance maker. IKEA US: finding appliance information.
Know which number you are looking at
- Product or model name: Names a design or product family. Different sizes, finishes, configurations, or generations may use a related name.
- Article or item number: IKEA’s product identifier, shown on product pages. It is usually more useful than a broad name for finding a specific listing.
- Manufacturer code, serial number, or date code: Markings that may appear on a physical plate or label. Their presence and format vary by item.
- Spare-part number: Identifies a replacement component, not the complete product. IKEA US says small hardware items have six-to-eight-digit spare-part identifiers in assembly instructions; larger furniture components do not have that same identifier. IKEA US: product and spare-part information.
How to compare similar or older models
If several IKEA listings seem plausible, use the strongest identifiers first, then compare the physical details. Treat this as a practical comparison method, not an IKEA authenticity scoring system.

- Compare the exact article number, if available.
- Compare dimensions and configuration, such as the number and arrangement of doors, drawers, or shelves.

For an older or discontinued item, a current product page may not be available, and assembly-document availability can differ between products and national IKEA sites. If you cannot find a matching listing, the identifiers and documentation you do have can still help IKEA support assess the item.

The steps above can support a model identification and show whether an item is consistent with IKEA’s product information. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal authentication database, security feature, or test that certifies every secondhand IKEA product. A familiar appearance or IKEA-style logo alone does not prove authenticity. Unless IKEA confirms the item more directly, describe the result as a likely or consistent model match rather than a proven genuine item.
