Red Dead Redemption 2 gives players a more fleshed-out way to interact with non-player characters than the simpler interaction systems Rockstar describes for Grand Theft Auto V and the first Red Dead Redemption. That is a developer’s comparison, not proof that RDR2 has universally better NPC AI. The more useful distinction is how each game’s interactions fit its setting and the kinds of responses it emphasizes.

What an NPC comparison can—and cannot—tell you

NPCs can be compared by the options a game gives you when approaching or addressing characters, how the world responds to your conduct, and how those interactions support the setting. Those are useful player-facing differences, but they do not produce a single, objective AI score.

The available comparison is strongest between Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2) and Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V). A 2025 conference paper examines both games through the role of theme in player actions, while Rockstar has described RDR2’s interaction system in relation to its earlier games. Neither source establishes a quantitative head-to-head ranking of NPC behavior.

How RDR2 connects player conduct to the world

Rockstar describes Honor as integrated into RDR2 and as influencing interactions with the world. That connects the game’s moral framing to how the player’s conduct can shape the experience, rather than treating Honor as wholly separate from the world around Arthur Morgan. Rockstar’s description does not establish that every pedestrian remembers every encounter or reacts persistently to all past behavior. Rockstar’s explanation of Honor in RDR2 is the basis for the narrower claim.

How RDR2 compares with GTA V

More developed interaction options, according to Rockstar

Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, described RDR2 as a point at which the studio could build a more fleshed-out system for interacting with NPCs. In a GamesRadar report, he contrasted that system with the simpler interaction systems in GTA V and the first Red Dead Redemption. This is Rockstar’s retrospective account of its design, not an independent measurement of how often NPCs react or how many behaviors each game contains. GamesRadar’s report quoting Nelson includes his characterization.

Different themes shape the comparison

A 2025 paper in the Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games compares RDR2 and GTA V in its analysis of how a game’s theme shapes actions. Its framing supports looking at how the Western setting influences the interactions RDR2 presents, rather than treating the games as interchangeable worlds with one obvious winner. The paper’s abstract does not establish that RDR2 surpasses GTA V across every kind of NPC behavior. The conference paper’s abstract describes the comparison and its thematic focus.

What the comparison does not establish

No verified figure in the cited material quantifies NPC population, behavioral complexity, reaction frequency, or comparative superiority. There is no shared benchmark here that measures both games under the same conditions. Claims that one has more NPCs, more reactions, or categorically smarter characters would therefore go beyond this evidence.

The sources also do not settle broader claims about how much behavior is scripted, how often encounters repeat, or whether characters retain memories of specific past encounters. Those mechanics should not be inferred from Rockstar’s description of Honor or Nelson’s account of a more fleshed-out interaction system.

Which game’s NPCs may suit you better?

  • Choose RDR2 as the comparison to explore if you are interested in a Western setting where Rockstar says Honor influences interactions with the world, and in a more developed NPC interaction system by the studio’s own description.
  • Use GTA V as a contrast if you want to consider how a different setting and theme shape player actions. The sources here support that thematic comparison, not a complete inventory or ranking of its NPC behaviors.

Rockstar lists RDR2’s release date as October 26, 2018, and identifies Arthur Morgan, the Van der Linde gang, Story Mode, and Red Dead Online in its official product information. Rockstar’s product page establishes that context; it does not serve as a comparative NPC benchmark.
