Choose the setting that best fits the experience you want, then adjust it if the game allows and your needs become clearer. “Easy,” “Normal” and “Hard” are not standard difficulty levels: check what each option changes in the specific game, and look for separate controls for mechanics such as combat, puzzles or driving assists.
Start with the experience you want
Decide what you want most from the game: a focus on story and exploration, a steady challenge, or a test of your skill. Use the game’s descriptions of its settings rather than relying on the labels alone. Difficulty is personal: as Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 explains, it depends on the relationship between a player’s abilities and the barriers the game presents.
Work out what is making the game difficult
Before changing a broad preset, identify where you are getting stuck. The issue might be combat, timing, aiming, puzzles, navigation or another mechanic. A preset may alter several of these at once, while a specific setting or assist may address only one.
Look for settings you can adjust separately
Some games let you tune individual mechanics instead of raising or lowering the entire challenge. Microsoft’s examples include separate combat and puzzle difficulty, and driving assists that can be adjusted for braking, steering, traction and stability. If one part is blocking progress, check whether you can change that part while keeping the challenge you want elsewhere. Microsoft recommends “ideally four or more” difficulty presets as an implementation guideline; that is a recommendation for game design, not a claim that every game offers four settings.

Check whether you can change difficulty later
Do not assume your first choice is permanent—or that every game lets you revise it freely. EA says Star Wars Jedi: Survivor allows difficulty changes outside combat. By contrast, PlayStation says God of War Ragnarök’s highest difficulty must be selected at the beginning of a new game. These are examples of title-specific rules, not general policies. Check the game’s own instructions before starting if you may want to change settings later.
Verify how difficulty affects rewards and progression
Do not assume a lower or higher setting changes—or leaves unchanged—rewards, achievements or progression. Check the game’s official documentation for the consequences that matter to you. For example, EA states that in-game rewards in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor do not differ by difficulty; that policy applies to that game alone.

Check accessibility information before choosing a game
If adjustable difficulty is important to you, accessibility details can help you identify games worth investigating. Steamworks includes an Adjustable Difficulty accessibility feature for store listings. Treat that information as a starting point, then confirm the available options and their effects in the game’s detailed settings or official documentation.
