How to find demos to play
Next Fest showcases upcoming games with demos that Steam describes as free to try. Browse the event page’s featured games, or narrow the selection using categories, tags, subgenres, and features. Steam also offers a personalized Discovery Queue and an event schedule where you can find developer streams and chats. Its 2023 announcement describes the queue as a way to find popular demos similar to games you already play: Steam’s Next Fest announcement.
As you compare titles, look at the game’s genre and tags, supported features and languages, system requirements, and any listed playtime. These details vary by game, so do not expect every store page to provide all of them. A scheduled developer stream or chat can also help you decide what to try.

How to download and launch a Steam Next Fest demo
- Open the event page. Visit Steam Next Fest and, if useful, set an event reminder.
- Choose a game. Browse the featured demos, filter by category or tag, or use the Discovery Queue.
- Open the game’s Steam page. A demo may have a separate store page, or its install button may appear on the page for the full game.
- Add or install the demo. Select the demo’s install control. Steam also lets you add a demo to your library and install it later.
- Launch it from your Library. After installation, open your Steam Library and launch the demo. Check the game page or the developer’s announcement for its contents and system requirements.
Steam may notify you when a demo becomes available for a game on your wishlist or one from a developer you follow. Steam’s July 25, 2024 demo update also points players to the Steam demo hub and describes thousands of demos launching on Steam each year; those platform-wide figures are not a current Next Fest demo count.
How long is a Next Fest demo available?
There is no single availability end date that applies to every Next Fest demo. Check the individual game’s Steam page and the developer’s event announcement, since a demo may have its own availability window. For example, the DragonSword: Awakening team said its June 2026 demo would be deactivated 24 hours after Next Fest ended. That was a title-specific announcement, not a Steam-wide rule; do not assume other demos close at the same time or remain playable indefinitely. See the team’s DragonSword: Awakening announcement.
