Sometimes—but a state’s “no income tax” label does not tell you whether your household will spend less overall. You may pay less state income tax on some income and still come out behind after property or sales taxes, housing, and other local costs. To find out, compare your actual income, spending, and housing costs in specific places, for the same tax year.
What does “no income tax” mean in 2026?
It usually means a state does not impose a broad-based individual income tax. The Tax Foundation’s 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index lists Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming in that category. New Hampshire eliminated its tax on interest and dividends effective January 1, 2025, so older lists that still count that tax as current are out of date.
Washington is a separate case, not simply another state with no tax exposure on every kind of income. It does not tax wage income, but the Tax Foundation’s 2026 Washington profile, updated October 5, 2026, reports a graduated 9.9% capital-gains tax on gains above $1 million. That distinction may matter to people with substantial investment gains. Check current official state rules for the tax year and income involved before relying on any summary.

Why can a lower income-tax bill still cost more?
State income tax is only one part of a household budget. A move can change several other costs at once, and their effect depends on the household—not just the state.

- Property tax: If you own a home or plan to buy one, compare the likely property-tax bill for the specific homes and localities. Statewide averages cannot tell you what a particular property will cost.
- Sales and excise taxes: A household that spends a large share of its income on taxable purchases may feel these taxes differently from one that saves or invests more. Check relevant local taxes as well as state rates.
- Housing and general prices: Rent, home prices, utilities, insurance, transportation, and everyday expenses can offset a tax reduction. A statewide price index is context, not a quote for a home or a personal budget.
- Income type: Wages, investment gains, and other income may receive different treatment. Do not assume that a rule for wages applies to every source of income.
- Move-related changes: A new salary, commute, insurance bill, or housing arrangement can affect the result even if the tax rules are unchanged.
How to compare your current location with a destination
Build an annual comparison for the same household in the same tax year. Start with what you actually pay now, then estimate the corresponding costs in each specific destination. Use quotes and official tax information where available rather than multiplying a statewide tax-burden percentage by your income.
- List your income by type. Separate wages from investment gains and other income that may be treated differently. Note any major changes you expect after moving.
- Estimate state and relevant local income taxes. Apply the rules for your income and likely residency status in both locations. Check each state’s official tax authority for the applicable year.
- Add property taxes if you own or expect to buy. Use the expected property value and the relevant local bill or estimate; do not substitute a state ranking for a property-specific calculation.
- Estimate sales and excise taxes against your spending. Compare the taxes relevant to the goods and services your household actually buys, including local taxes where applicable.
- Compare housing and regular living costs. Use realistic rent or ownership costs and include recurring expenses that would change, such as commuting and insurance.
- Calculate the difference across a full year, then examine the move year separately. Part-year residency and filing rules vary by state pair. Confirm the rules for both states and your actual move date before estimating or filing.
Keep the assumptions visible. If a destination would require a different home, salary, or commute, show those changes instead of attributing the whole difference to taxes. The result is a household comparison, not a guarantee: actual bills depend on your circumstances and the rules in force.

How to use state tax and price comparisons without mistaking them for a forecast
Rankings and statewide estimates can help identify questions to investigate, but they do not calculate your personal savings. The Tax Foundation’s state and local tax-burden estimates cover calendar year 2022. They allocate some taxes according to who bears the economic cost, which may differ from who legally pays or where a tax is collected. The Foundation says the estimates are not individual taxpayer bills and exclude compliance costs, economic-efficiency losses, and the value of public services funded by taxes.

For price context, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis explains that “Regional price parities (RPPs) measure the differences in price levels across states and metropolitan areas for a given year and are expressed as a percentage of the overall national price level.” Its 2024 Regional Price Parities were released February 19, 2026. The 2024 overall state figures were 110.7 for California, 110.0 for Hawaii, and 108.8 for New Jersey among the highest; Arkansas was 86.9, Mississippi 87.0, and Iowa and Oklahoma 87.8 among the lowest. For housing rents, California’s 2024 RPP was 154.3 and West Virginia’s was 54.2. These figures describe relative price levels, not the cost of a particular home or a household’s tax savings. Compare local housing quotes and your own spending as well.
Does moving save money for wage earners, homeowners, renters, or retirees?
There is no single answer by household type. The same destination can look different depending on which costs dominate your budget.

- QUICK AND EASY ASSEMBLY: No tape required, easy to pack and stack, boxes are preprinted with convenient labeling space
- REINFORCED HANDLES: Worry about your move, not your boxes. Reinforced, easy carry handles make it simple to carry and move your boxes
- CONVENIENT LIFT-OFF LID: Quick access to your items when needed, but the lid stays secure while transporting your moving boxes
- RECYCLABLE, STACKABLE, AND REUSABLE: Our strong moving boxes are easier to keep organized in stacks, quick to break down, and store flat until ready to reuse
- MEDIUM SIZE: 19-in x 14.5-in x 15.5-in, the versatile box in our range that works for nearly everything
- Wage earners: A state’s treatment of wages may reduce the income-tax line in your comparison. Set that against the destination’s housing, sales-tax, and recurring living costs, and account for any salary or commuting changes.
- Homeowners and prospective buyers: Compare the income-tax effect with property taxes and the actual cost of the home you would occupy. A state-level rate or ranking cannot establish the bill on a particular property.
- Renters: Property taxes may not appear as a bill in your name, but housing costs still matter. Compare realistic rents and other regular expenses in the neighborhoods you are considering.
- Retirees and investors: Identify the types of retirement and investment income involved, including any significant capital gains. Do not treat a wage-income exemption as proof that all investment income is exempt.
What economic studies can—and cannot—tell you
A policy model can examine possible effects of changing a state’s tax system, but it cannot promise that an individual mover will save money. The White House Council of Economic Advisers’ January 28, 2026 analysis models income-tax phase-outs under two approaches to replacing revenue: broadening the sales-tax base alone, or combining that approach with limits on spending growth. It reports modeled average-state outcomes of 1% to 1.6% higher GDP and 16% to 19% more new startups under its scenarios. Those are conditional model results, not measured savings for a household that relocates.
When should you get tax help?
This comparison is general information, not a calculation of your tax liability. Consult the official tax authorities for both states and consider a qualified tax professional when your move involves substantial investment income, uncertain domicile, or a part-year return. The right treatment can depend on the states, locality, income type, ownership, tax year, and move date.
