Start with the manual for your exact keyboard model and revision. Connect it as the manufacturer specifies, confirm the default layout works, then make and test one supported change at a time. Software features, hot-swap support, and compatible parts vary by model, so do not assume instructions for one board apply to another.
Identify what your keyboard supports
Before changing settings or buying parts, find the model name and revision on the keyboard, packaging, or manufacturer’s support page. Open the matching manual and check the items that determine what you can safely configure:
- Connection and operating system: Confirm whether the board supports USB, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz wireless, and whether the desired mode and configuration software work with your computer. ASUS’s ROG Azoth support FAQ, for example, describes its own connection modes and configurable keys; those details should not be assumed for other keyboards. ASUS ROG Azoth support FAQ
- Layout: Note the physical layout and whether compact dimensions mean you will need function layers or remapped keys for missing dedicated keys.
- Switches: Verify whether the board is hot-swappable, soldered, mechanical, or magnetic. Hot-swap capability applies to the specific supported switch type; it does not mean any switch will fit.
- Configuration: Look for the maker’s utility and its documented options, such as key assignments, lighting, profiles, firmware updates, or gaming controls. Availability depends on the model and platform. CORSAIR documents these capabilities for specific boards in its MAKR PRO 75 manual and K70 PRO TKL manual.
Set up the keyboard before customizing it
- Connect it in a documented mode. Use the cable, wireless pairing process, or receiver instructions for your model.
- Test the default layout. Type in a text field and check letters, numbers, punctuation, and any function-layer keys you rely on. Resolve a layout or connection issue before remapping keys.
- Install only the matching configuration utility. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for software and firmware. Never load firmware intended for another model.
- Change one setting and test it. Save the setting in the software or an onboard profile if supported, then check it in the work application or game where you intend to use it.
- Check whether it persists. Close the utility or connect to another device in the mode you expect to use. Confirm whether the setting remains; some behavior depends on the keyboard, software, operating system, or connection mode.
Choose work and gaming settings deliberately
A keyboard can serve both roles without needing the same configuration for each. If the software supports profiles, a work profile might put frequent shortcuts on convenient keys, while a gaming profile might use game-specific remaps. Check the manual for how profiles are saved and whether they work on your target device and in your chosen game.
Use these criteria to decide what to change:
- Desk space and layout: A compact board can leave more room for a mouse, but may require layers or remaps to reach keys that are not present as dedicated keys.
- Feel and sound: Choose switches according to your typing preference and the people sharing your work area. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish one switch as universally best for work or gaming.
- Connection: Confirm that the wired or wireless mode you want is supported and behaves as needed on the device you use.
- Software options: Verify support for key remapping, profiles, onboard storage, macros, lighting, and any gaming controls rather than assuming they are standard features.
Some controls are specific to a particular switch technology. CORSAIR’s K70 PRO TKL manual documents actuation controls for that magnetic-switch keyboard; this should not be taken as a feature of ordinary mechanical-switch boards. See the K70 PRO TKL manual.

Replace switches only on a compatible hot-swap board
Do not try to pull a switch until the exact manual confirms that the keyboard is hot-swappable and identifies compatible replacements. NuPhy’s guidance says not to mix HE magnetic and mechanical switches; ASUS also advises powering the keyboard off before replacing switches. NuPhy switch replacement guide · ASUS ROG Azoth support FAQ
- Turn the keyboard off and disconnect it from power.
- Remove the keycap, then use an appropriate switch puller to grip and remove the switch.
- Check that the replacement switch is the correct type and that its pins are straight.
- Align the pins with the socket and press the switch straight down without forcing it.
- Reconnect the keyboard and test the key. If it does not work or feels wrong, power off again and inspect the fit rather than pressing harder.
If the keyboard is soldered, the switch type is uncertain, or the replacement does not match the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance, stop and consult the exact model manual or support page.

Check compatibility before changing keycaps
A keycap set must match more than the number of keys. Check the board’s layout, the keycap profile, switch structure, and the sizes of nonstandard large keys. A set that looks similar may lack the right sizes for a compact or unusual layout. NuPhy’s guide explains these compatibility checks and the removal technique. NuPhy keycap replacement guide
- Use a keycap puller and pull straight up; avoid twisting sideways.
- For a large key, align its stabilizers as you install it.
- Test the key for rubbing or sticking before using the keyboard normally.
Troubleshoot changes that do not work as expected
- A remap or lighting change disappears: Check whether the setting was saved to an onboard profile or depends on the configuration utility. Test with the utility closed and in the connection mode you actually use.
- A setting is missing from the utility: Confirm that the software matches the model and that the manual lists the feature. Some options are product-specific, and some gaming controls depend on switch type.
- A replacement switch will not seat: Stop rather than forcing it. Recheck compatibility, pin alignment, and whether the board is designed for that switch type.
- A keycap binds or rubs: Remove it carefully, verify the keycap size and profile, and check stabilizer alignment on large keys.
Make physical changes and software changes separately where possible. That makes it easier to identify which change caused a problem and to restore the previous setting.
