Steam Next Fest is a recurring, free-to-browse Steam event where players try demos of upcoming games, watch optional developer livestreams, and wishlist titles they want to follow. It is not a single game or a subscription, and the demos do not share a standard length, feature set, or availability period. The next edition, as of October 7, 2026, runs October 19–26, 2026, Pacific Daylight Time.
What Steam Next Fest is
Valve describes Next Fest as a weeklong event promoting upcoming games with playable demos. Its purpose is to connect players with games they might like and give developers a way to reach prospective fans and gather feedback. Steam schedules editions in February, June, and October. For players, the event is a collection of game pages and demos organized on Steam. You can browse by categories and game tags, play demos, watch livestreams where developers offer them, and wishlist games. A wishlist can help you follow a title and receive a launch notification when the full game becomes available.
How demos work for players
Each demo is different
A demo is a playable preview of one game. Steam does not set a universal playtime, content scope, control scheme, system requirement, or accessibility standard for Next Fest demos. Check the individual game’s Steam page and the developer’s description for what is included and what hardware or controls it needs.

When demos become available—and whether they stay up
A demo may be public before the festival, during the Press Preview period, or shortly before the public event begins. It must be publicly playable by the festival’s start to participate. After Next Fest, the developer decides whether to keep the demo available or deactivate it; the event’s end does not automatically remove every demo. Steam encourages developers to tell players if access will end, so check the game’s page for an availability notice. These details are covered in Steam’s Next Fest FAQ and guidance.
How to choose what to try
- Use the event’s categories and the game’s tags to find genres or styles that interest you.
- Read the demo description for its stated content and scope rather than assuming it is a complete game or a fixed-length trial.
- Check the game page for controls, accessibility information, and system requirements.
- If you like a game, wishlist it to keep track of its eventual launch.

Steam says public demos opted into Press Preview are included, and press can see what is publicly available. The edition page also lists earlier build-review and trailer milestones; developers should consult its current schedule rather than infer deadlines from a previous festival. Eligibility and choosing an edition
For October 2026, Steam’s rules require a Steamworks account in good standing, a published and public store page for the base game, an upcoming unreleased title, and a publicly playable demo by the event start. A prologue or short-form version of already released content is not eligible, and a game may participate in only one Next Fest. The title must remain unreleased through the festival; for this edition, that means releasing after October 26. Edition choice is a timing decision. Steam notes that a team may choose an earlier festival to get feedback or a later one nearer launch to build interest. Readiness, review time, demo availability, and planned release timing all affect which single edition makes sense.
Registration, demo setup, and review
- Register from the base game’s Steamworks page, not from the demo app.
- Create a separate demo-type app associated with the base game, then prepare its build and assets for review.
- Use the applicable edition page for submission deadlines. For October 2026, the demo must be publicly live by October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT. Steam recommends submitting well ahead of the event and launching at least 30 minutes before it begins so there is time to catch launch problems.
- Set the game’s primary event categories during registration and check the developer preview to see where it appears.
Steam’s build review checks whether the demo runs and includes the features promised; it is not full quality assurance and does not look for most bugs. A developer may update a demo after review, but those updates are not reviewed again. Approval therefore is not a guarantee that a build is bug-free. See Steam’s demo setup guidance.

Visibility and livestreams
Steam says visibility is randomized in most event locations for the first few days, except named lists and personalized sections. Later, some carousels shown to logged-in users are personalized based on user behavior. Participation does not guarantee a particular number of views, sales, wishlist additions, or press coverage. Livestreaming is optional.
