On Windows or Mac, Google voice search uses the microphone permission for the browser you use to open Google—not a standalone Google Search desktop app. Allow microphone access in two places: the browser’s permission for the Google site and the computer’s permission for the browser. If you meant the Google app on a phone or tablet, its permission settings are different; Google’s guidance covers that mobile app at Manage your Google app permissions.
Change Google’s microphone permission in Chrome
Chrome controls microphone access for individual sites, separately from your computer’s settings. Google voice search needs both permissions to allow access.
- Open Chrome and visit the Google site or feature where you want to use voice search.
- If Chrome asks to use your microphone, choose an option that allows access. Depending on the prompt, access may apply for the current visit or while you visit the site.
- To review a saved choice, open Chrome Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone.
- Review the default behavior and the allowed or blocked site lists. Change Google’s permission, or remove its saved exception so Chrome can ask you again.
See Google Chrome Help: Use your camera and microphone in Chrome. If Chrome is managed by your workplace or school, an administrator may control microphone policies.
Allow microphone access on Windows
Windows has a separate microphone privacy control for apps. Enable the desktop-app setting for browsers such as Chrome, then check Chrome’s Google-site permission above.

If voice search still cannot use the microphone
- Check both permission layers. A site allowed in Chrome can still be blocked by Windows or macOS, and system permission does not override a blocked site setting.
- On Windows, check desktop-app access. A desktop browser may not appear in the same individual-app list as Microsoft Store apps. Microsoft explains this distinction in Windows privacy settings that apps use; use the broader desktop-app control.
- Check for browser management. On a work or school device, an administrator may have set Chrome’s microphone policy.
- Separate permissions from device problems. If the settings allow access but no microphone is available to the computer, check whether the microphone is detected, selected as the sound input, or muted. Those are device or audio settings rather than Google-site permission issues.
