Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecure Raspberry Pi Connect by protecting the Raspberry Pi ID account you use to sign in: choose a unique password, enable TOTP two-factor authentication, save the recovery code, and review linked devices. Connect access is controlled through Raspberry Pi ID, not through a separate password for each Pi.
How Raspberry Pi Connect account security works
Raspberry Pi Connect uses Raspberry Pi ID. Registration requires an email address and password, followed by email verification. The current Connect guide requires Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later; check the Raspberry Pi Connect guide for current requirements and interface details.
Because the account controls access to linked devices, a strong local login password on the Pi is not a substitute for securing Raspberry Pi ID. The official pages specify an email and password but do not set a password length or composition rule, or require a password manager.
Choose a unique Raspberry Pi ID password
Use a long password that you do not reuse on other websites. Reuse can put your Connect account at risk if another service where you used the same password is compromised. A password manager can help create and store a distinct password, but this is general account-security advice—not a Raspberry Pi requirement.

Enable TOTP two-factor authentication
Raspberry Pi ID supports time-based one-time password (TOTP) authentication. You will need access to a TOTP-generating app and your Raspberry Pi ID account. Raspberry Pi names Authy and Google Authenticator as examples and notes iCloud Keychain integration on macOS and iOS; these are examples, not an exhaustive list or endorsement.
- Sign in to your Raspberry Pi ID account and open the Raspberry Pi ID guide for the current account settings path.
- Choose the Two-factor authentication setting to begin setup.
- Scan the displayed QR code with your TOTP app.
- Enter the six-digit TOTP currently shown in the app to complete registration.
- Save the recovery code shown after setup before closing the confirmation screen.
Save the recovery code before relying on 2FA
Keep the recovery code somewhere safe and separate from your phone. Raspberry Pi’s guide says it is “the only way to bypass 2FA if you lose your phone and the 2FA app.” Do not leave it somewhere unprotected or store it only on the device you may lose.

Review and remove linked devices
Connect sends an email when a device is linked. Sign in to Connect and open the Devices tab to check the list; confirm each Pi is yours and has a name you recognize. Use the Connect guide for the current removal instructions.
If you receive an unexpected device-link email
- Change your Raspberry Pi ID password immediately.
- Inspect the Devices tab and remove the unfamiliar device using the documented Connect controls.
- Enable TOTP two-factor authentication if it is not already on.
Changing the password and removing the device are separate actions. Raspberry Pi’s guidance does not say that a password change automatically unlinks an already-linked device.

Limit Connect access you do not need
Connect can be enabled or disabled, and its menu provides sign-in and sign-out controls as well as remote shell and screen-sharing options. Turn off remote shell or screen sharing when you do not need that access, and sign out when appropriate. The current guide says Connect is included in full Raspberry Pi OS variants but disabled by default; the Lite variant is shell-only. These details can vary by OS and interface version, so consult the current Connect documentation.
Screen sharing requires Wayland and is not available on Lite or X-based systems. Raspberry Pi’s November 2024 release announcement also described Connect as disabled by default at that time; use the current guide rather than relying on older release-era behavior.

What Raspberry Pi says about Connect’s connection
Raspberry Pi says Connect uses an encrypted connection and normally connects the Pi directly to the browser. If a direct connection cannot be established, Connect may use a relay; Raspberry Pi says it retains only the operational metadata needed to run Connect in relay cases. These are the vendor’s descriptions, not a guarantee about compromised devices or a statement of independent security-audit results. The cited documentation does not establish the encryption implementation details or confirm support for physical security keys.
