Choose zram for compressed swap held in RAM, zswap to cache pages in compressed RAM before they reach an existing disk-backed swap area, or a swapfile when you need swap space backed by a filesystem. They solve different problems: zram uses memory instead of a disk destination, zswap sits in front of one, and a swapfile supplies one. There is no universal performance winner; the right choice depends on memory pressure, CPU cost, storage, filesystem support, and your distribution’s configuration.

How the three options differ

Option Where swapped pages go What you need Main trade-off
zram Compressed in physical RAM, through a RAM-based block device. A configured zram device; it can be initialized with mkswap and activated with swapon. Can provide swap without disk I/O, but the compressed pages still consume RAM and compression uses CPU.
zswap First in a compressed RAM pool; pages can be evicted to a backing swap device when the pool reaches its limit. An active backing swap device or file, plus zswap enabled in the kernel configuration. May reduce backing-device I/O, at the cost of CPU and RAM for the cache.
Swapfile On the filesystem that stores the file. A correctly allocated file on a filesystem and kernel combination that supports swapfiles. Provides disk-backed swap without repartitioning, but allocation rules and filesystem compatibility matter.

The Linux kernel describes zswap as a “lightweight compressed cache for swap pages.” It is a cache in front of backing swap, not a replacement for that backing area. See the Linux kernel zswap documentation.

Choose based on what you need

Choose zram for compressed-memory swap

Consider zram when you do not have disk-backed swap and want a compressed swap device in memory. The kernel’s zram module creates devices such as /dev/zram0; pages written to one are compressed and held in RAM. The kernel guide’s basic example initializes and activates it with mkswap /dev/zram0 and swapon /dev/zram0. That demonstrates the mechanism, not a persistent, distribution-specific setup. For management options and device statistics, consult the Linux kernel zram documentation.

A configured zram disk size is not the same as the amount of physical RAM it has already consumed: the device’s storage grows as pages are written, and an idle device has a small overhead. The kernel guide says there is little point making the virtual disk larger than twice system memory, based on an expected 2:1 compression ratio. Treat that as kernel guidance, not a guaranteed ratio or usable capacity; real compression depends on the pages being stored.

The kernel guide also documents optional writeback for idle or incompressible pages. Its current interface requires a partition as the backing device; ordinary zram should not be treated as arbitrary disk overflow or as swapfile-backed writeback. The guide notes that writing back to flash can raise wear concerns and describes a configurable writeback budget.

Choose zswap when you already need backing swap

Consider zswap if you have disk-backed swap and want a compressed RAM cache between memory and that storage. Pages being swapped out may be compressed into a dynamically allocated pool. If the pool reaches its configured maximum, pages can be evicted to the backing swap device. This can reduce swap I/O, but compression consumes CPU and the pool uses RAM. The kernel guide documents max_pool_percent as a way to bound the pool; it does not establish one universally appropriate percentage or compressor.

Whether zswap is enabled by default depends on kernel configuration. Kernel command-line options and runtime sysfs interfaces can control it, so check your distribution’s documentation and current system settings rather than assuming a default. See the kernel administrator guide.

Choose a swapfile for filesystem-backed swap

A swapfile is useful when you need disk-backed swap without creating a separate partition. The file must be allocated in a way the kernel can use. The upstream swapon(8) manual warns that files with holes and files on copy-on-write filesystems may be rejected because the kernel needs direct access to their backing storage.

Filesystem support is version-sensitive. The upstream manual says Btrfs swapfiles are supported since Linux 5.0 when the file has the nocow attribute, and XFS preallocated swapfiles are supported since Linux 4.18. The mkswap(8) manual says mkswap --file gained Btrfs nocow setup in util-linux 2.41. Confirm the installed kernel and util-linux behavior using your distribution’s manuals before copying a command; a recipe valid on one release may fail on another.

Can you use zram and disk-backed swap together?

Some configurations can combine them, but the result depends on distribution setup and swap priorities. Do not assume that enabling both automatically improves performance or that their interaction is the same everywhere. If you want both compressed-memory and disk-backed swap, check how your distribution configures each area and which one the kernel prefers. Zswap, by contrast, specifically acts as a cache in front of backing swap.

What about speed, hibernation, and defaults?

Performance depends on the workload

zram and zswap add compression work, trading CPU time for different memory and storage-I/O behavior. The outcome depends on the workload, compressor, storage device, and configuration. The kernel documentation does not provide a controlled, like-for-like benchmark across zram, zswap, and swapfiles, so it does not support naming one as universally fastest. If performance is decisive, test a representative workload on your own system and observe memory pressure, CPU use, and swap activity.

Verify hibernation and distribution behavior separately

If you need hibernation, check your distribution’s current hibernation and resume instructions for the specific swap arrangement. The kernel documentation cited here does not establish one universal hibernation setup. Likewise, distro defaults and persistent-setup steps vary; the kernel’s basic zram commands alone do not configure a service or boot-time behavior.

How to monitor and validate your choice

  • For zram: inspect the statistics exposed under /sys/block/zram<id>/, including original data size, compressed data size, and total allocated memory. They show how your own workload is compressing rather than relying on a generic ratio.
  • For zswap: use the kernel’s documented runtime controls and statistics for your system to check whether it is active and how its pool behaves. Consult the zswap guide for available interfaces.
  • For a swapfile: check the filesystem, kernel, and utility versions, then confirm the area activates successfully with the tools documented by your distribution.
  • For any combination: verify active swap areas and their priorities rather than inferring behavior from the fact that multiple mechanisms are configured.

Choose the arrangement that matches your need for compressed RAM, disk-backed capacity, or both. Validate its behavior under the workload that matters to you; generic compression expectations and kernel mechanisms are not a substitute for system-specific results.
