Before installing a macOS beta, make a fresh Time Machine backup to an external drive, confirm it has finished, and keep that pre-beta backup available. It gives you a documented route to restore your files and return to an earlier macOS if you need to leave the beta. Apple recommends testing beta software on a secondary device or partition—not a production or business-critical Mac. Apple’s beta FAQ
What you need before you start
- A compatible external hard drive or SSD connected to your Mac, for example over USB-C or Thunderbolt. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity; its example is 2 TB for a Mac with 1 TB of storage. This is a sizing recommendation, not a guarantee that the disk will meet every retention need. Apple’s Time Machine guidance
- A disk whose existing contents you can safely erase, or a different disk. Time Machine setup may ask to erase the selected device. Do not approve erasure if it contains files you need. Apple recommends using the disk only for Time Machine backups in the standard setup. Apple’s backup-disk guidance
- Enough time for the first backup to finish. Apple notes that the initial backup can take longer than later incremental backups; the actual duration depends on your Mac and data.
Set up an external Time Machine disk
These steps apply to macOS Ventura 13 or later; labels can vary by release. For other versions, use Apple’s version-specific instructions in its Time Machine setup guide.
- Connect the external drive to your Mac.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Time Machine.
- Choose Add Backup Disk, or the Add button, select the external drive, then choose Set Up Disk.
- If macOS offers to erase the drive, continue only if you have verified it contains nothing you need. Otherwise, cancel and choose another destination.
- If you enable backup encryption, save the password somewhere safe. Apple says you need it to restore files from the encrypted backup.
Run a fresh backup and confirm it finished
- Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu, or let an automatic backup begin.
- Check the Time Machine menu for backup progress. Wait until the backup is complete, then check the displayed latest-backup date and time.
- Proceed with the beta only after confirming that the latest backup is the one you just made.
For a successful network backup, Apple also documents an optional verification command: hold Option while opening the Time Machine menu, then choose Verify Backups. This is a troubleshooting or verification step for network backups, not a universal requirement for an external drive. Apple’s Time Machine troubleshooting guide
What the backup covers—and what it does not
Time Machine backs up files that are not part of macOS, including apps, music, photos, and documents. It does not back up macOS itself or apps installed as part of macOS installation. Apple’s Time Machine guide

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
That distinction matters if you later leave the beta: restoring files is not, by itself, a way to downgrade the operating system. Apple’s rollback instructions involve erasing and reinstalling macOS, then restoring from a backup made before beta installation. Apple’s instructions for restoring shipping software
Keep the pre-beta backup for a possible rollback
Keep the backup made before installing the beta available, and distinguish it from backups made after you start using beta software. Apple says the backup selected during its restore process must have been completed before beta installation and must be from the current macOS version or an earlier version that precedes the beta. The procedure differs between Intel and Apple silicon Macs; Apple’s silicon instructions reference Apple Configurator. Read the current hardware-specific restore steps before starting a rollback.

Can iCloud or a manual copy replace Time Machine?
No—not for the documented beta rollback path. iCloud syncs and stores selected information, and Apple also describes manually copying photos, videos, and documents to external storage. Those can provide additional protection or access to particular files, but Apple does not describe them as substitutes for the pre-beta Time Machine backup used in its rollback instructions. Apple supports network Time Machine destinations, including compatible NAS devices over SMB. That option depends on the destination’s compatibility and network availability. Apple says AFP-based NAS backup is not recommended and will not be supported in macOS 27 or later. For a beta rollback, the critical requirement remains a qualifying backup made before beta installation; follow Apple’s current restore guidance for your Mac. Apple’s supported backup-disk guidance
