Build your revised budget around your new take-home pay—not the raise amount on your offer letter—and decide in advance where the extra money will go. List your bills and everyday spending, assign the increase to priorities that matter to you, then compare the plan with what you actually spend and adjust next month.

Start with the income that reaches your account

A raise does not necessarily increase your spendable income by the same percentage as your gross pay. Deductions affect what arrives in your account, and the budgeting guidance cited here does not calculate individual tax withholding. Use the new net amount shown on your pay statement or deposited into your account as the starting point.

Write down every income source you expect to use for the month. If your income is irregular, consumer.gov’s budgeting guide suggests estimating monthly income by dividing last year’s total by 12. Treat that as a starting estimate, not a guarantee: a major change in work or circumstances may make last year a poor guide.

Map your current spending before assigning the raise

A budget is a written plan for how you will use monthly income. List fixed bills, variable expenses, and bill due dates so you can see both the total and when money must be available. The CFPB’s budgeting guidance recommends updating the plan after a change in employment or spending habits.

  • Fixed bills: Include recurring obligations such as housing, utilities, insurance, and minimum debt payments.
  • Variable spending: Include groceries, transportation, household purchases, and other costs that can change from month to month.
  • Savings: Record current contributions and any goals you want the new budget to support.
  • Timing: Note due dates and pay dates to check whether the money will be available when bills are due.

If tracking everything at once feels like too much, the CFPB suggests beginning with a week at a time. Choose a tracking method you will actually use; a paper list or the CFPB and consumer.gov worksheets can work without a paid app or planner.

Give the additional take-home pay specific jobs

Once you know the new monthly take-home amount and your current spending, decide how much of the increase will go to each priority. Options include building a cash reserve, paying down debt, saving for retirement or another longer-term goal, and setting aside an intentional amount for enjoyment. The Associated Press’s 2024 report from NerdWallet presents these as choices discussed by personal-finance experts, not a universal formula.

To choose, consider what the money needs to do for you: address a current vulnerability, stay accessible for a near-term need, or support a longer-term goal. Also consider whether a choice creates a recurring commitment or remains easy to change. There is no single ranking that applies to everyone.

A deliberate quality-of-life increase can be part of the plan. The risk is letting spending rise automatically just because income did. As Mabel Nuñez, founder of Girls on the Money, told the AP, “If you get a raise and use it to buy a new car or a new home or go out every weekend, your rate of spending might surpass your new income.” That is a caution about unplanned lifestyle creep, not a rule against enjoying some of your raise.

Use a percentage rule only if it fits

The CFPB’s 2016 “My spending rule to live by” worksheet offers the 50/20/30 rule of thumb: 50% of take-home pay for needs, 20% for savings and debt payments, and no more than 30% for wants. The worksheet also notes that common rules of thumb may not suit individual circumstances and invites people to choose a personal rule.

Use it as a way to review your budget, not as a required allocation for the raise. If your essential bills or goals do not fit those percentages, a different split may be more realistic. The CFPB worksheet is available as a prompt for making your own rule.

Make the plan repeatable, then check it against reality

If you choose a regular savings contribution, make it specific and repeatable where your cash flow allows. A recurring transfer can help, but the CFPB’s emergency-fund guide advises monitoring account balances so automated transfers do not trigger overdraft fees. You can also adjust the transfer amount or timing if your bill schedule makes the original setup unsafe.

After a month, compare planned amounts with actual spending, note what changed, and revise the next month’s budget. A budget is a working plan, not a one-time calculation. If the first version was too tight or left out a regular expense, adjust the plan rather than treating the mismatch as a reason to abandon it.
