Reduce background noise in iMovie on Mac

In the timeline, select the audio clip or a video clip that contains audio. To apply the adjustment to multiple clips, select them together.

In the adjustments bar, click Noise Reduction and Equalizer.

Check Reduce background noise.

Move the slider to the right to increase reduction or to the left to decrease it. At 0%, no background-noise reduction is applied; 100% is the maximum setting. These values describe Apple’s control, not a measured percentage of noise removed.

Play the clip and adjust the slider by ear until the result sounds acceptable.
Apple says the control can reduce background noise without reducing the clip’s overall volume. Maximum reduction does not guarantee that all noise will disappear. For a natural-sounding result, begin with a moderate setting, listen to the voice and any other important audio, and increase reduction only as needed. Apple’s iMovie for Mac guide also lists equalizer presets, including one for enhancing vocal quality; equalization is a separate adjustment from background-noise reduction.

What about iMovie on iPhone or iPad?
Apple’s iMovie documentation for iPhone describes editing audio clips, detaching audio from video, and arranging clips as background or foreground audio. Its iPhone and iPad guidance also covers adjusting clip volume, but does not provide the Mac guide’s Reduce background noise checkbox and slider steps. Do not confuse iMovie’s Mac post-editing control with Voice Isolation on iPhone. Apple documents Voice Isolation as a capture setting for calls in supported apps or websites, not as a way to clean up any clip already in an iMovie timeline. Apple’s iPhone guide to call audio and video explains that feature.

If the noise is in a recording you have not made yet
For future recordings, an external USB microphone may be usable as an iPhone audio input, depending on the device and connector. Check that the microphone is compatible with your iPhone and recording setup. A microphone can help with new recordings; it cannot remove noise already captured in an existing clip.
