1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can play a Japanese Android game in English by translating selectable text with Google Translate, translating screenshots with Google Lens, or using an OCR screen-translation app to display translations over the game. First check that the game is available to your Google Play account: translation tools do not change which titles appear in your store.
Check whether you can install the game
Search for the exact title in Google Play while signed in to the account you plan to use. A game’s availability can depend on the title and your Play country, which is an account and store setting. Check Google’s Play country guidance and the game’s current listing; availability can vary by country.
Installation access and translation are separate issues. A translator cannot make an unavailable listing appear. A country change, VPN, or APK sideload is not a guaranteed workaround for account, payment, compatibility, or access restrictions.
Choose a translation method for the text you see
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Translate Tap to Translate | Text the game lets you select and copy | Does not translate text embedded in images |
| Google Lens | A menu or dialogue line captured in a screenshot | Usually requires pausing or leaving gameplay to inspect the image |
| OCR screen-translation overlay | Frequently encountered text during ongoing play | Requires reviewing app modes, permissions, and text handling; OCR can struggle with stylized or changing text |
Use Google Translate for selectable text
- Open Google Translate and enable Tap to Translate in its settings.
- In the game, select and copy the Japanese text if Android exposes it to the usual text-selection controls.
- Tap the Translate bubble and set English as the target language if needed.
Google’s instructions for translating text in other apps state: “Tap to Translate works with text, not with images.” Many games render dialogue and menus as part of the screen artwork, so the text may not be selectable and this method may not work on those screens.

Translate a screenshot with Google Lens
- Capture a screenshot showing the Japanese text.
- Open the image in Google Lens.
- Select the text or just the relevant area, then choose Translate. Set Japanese as the input language and English as the output language if Lens does not detect them automatically.
Lens can translate text selected from an image, including a selected portion rather than only the entire screenshot. A clear, legible image gives text recognition a better chance. This is a practical option for checking a one-off menu or dialogue line, but it interrupts play while you inspect the image. See Google Lens help.
Use an OCR overlay for repeated translation
Screen-translation apps use optical character recognition (OCR) to read text visible on the display and show a translation, often in an overlay. This can reduce the need to capture and open a screenshot for each line. Their modes, permissions, and processing choices vary, so check the specific app’s current Google Play listing and settings before using it.
Screen Translate
The Screen Translate Google Play listing describes full-screen, selected-region, automatic, and subtitle modes, and says it supports on-device OCR recognition for Japanese. The listing says the app uses Android Accessibility Service to read on-screen text for translation. It also says text is sent to the selected translation engine, or remains on the device when on-device OCR is used. These are disclosures from the app listing, not an independent audit of its data handling. The listing shows an update date of 4 October 2026; that is listing metadata, not evidence of translation performance.
Gaminik
The Gaminik Google Play listing includes Japanese among its supported source languages. It says its default Universal Translation Mode does not use Accessibility Service, while Chat Translation Mode does. Review the mode you intend to use and its permissions rather than assuming all screen translators access or process text in the same way.

PlayTranslate
The PlayTranslate repository describes live or instant translation with overlay or notification output. It notes that custom fonts or graphics may prevent support for some games and that internet access can affect translation quality. Its page includes mixed setup directions, so use the current release documentation and review requested permissions before installing.

OCR overlays can be convenient, but recognition and translation are not guaranteed to look like polished localization. Stylized fonts, text effects, dense menus, animation, and rapidly changing dialogue can make recognition harder. The available app descriptions establish features, not a comparative accuracy ranking, so test a candidate on the game and device you intend to use rather than relying on an unsupported claim that one app is best.

- Text access: If the game exposes text for copying, try Tap to Translate. If the words are pixels in the game screen, use Lens or OCR.
- Workflow: Use a screenshot for occasional lookups; consider an overlay when you need to translate repeatedly.
- Japanese OCR: Confirm the app specifically lists Japanese support, and check whether recognition is on-device or uses a selected service.
- Permissions and handling: Review why the app requests accessibility or overlay access and where captured text is processed.
- Practical fit: Try the mode on a representative menu or dialogue screen; fonts, effects, and animation can affect what it recognizes.
Machine translation is best treated as a comprehension aid. It may help you navigate menus and follow dialogue, but the cited feature descriptions do not establish that any of these options reproduces a game’s official English localization.
