To remove plosives from an existing recording, treat only the affected sounds: try a gentle high-pass filter for a low-frequency thump, use a dedicated de-plosive processor for a severe or distorted burst, and repair stubborn spots locally. Preview each change and listen to the word in context so the fix does not make the voice sound thin or unnatural.

Why plosives sound like thumps

A plosive is a burst of air from a consonant such as P or B striking the microphone. It often creates a low-frequency bump, and a strong burst can also distort the recording. A bass cut may reduce the bump, but it may not repair distortion.

Choose a repair based on the sound

What you hear Starting method Main risk
A low-frequency bump without obvious distortion Try a restrained high-pass or low-cut filter. Removing too much low end changes the voice quality. iZotope gives around 120 Hz as an example starting point, not a universal cutoff. iZotope’s guide
A severe plosive or audible distortion Preview a dedicated de-plosive processor and adjust it gently. Excessive processing can damage the natural voice tone. iZotope’s RX workflow
A stubborn, isolated spot Use a localized spectral repair on the affected frequencies. An overly strong repair can leave an unnatural-sounding patch. iZotope’s RX workflow
A short transient pop in Adobe Audition Try Click/Pop Eliminator selectively. A loud transient may be mistaken for a pop, and strong processing can make audio thinner or flatter. Adobe Audition noise-reduction and restoration effects

How to repair a plosive in an existing recording

  1. Find the affected sound. Listen for the burst and inspect the waveform or spectral display to locate it.
  2. Try a conservative low cut for a simple thump. Apply a high-pass or low-cut filter and raise the cutoff only as needed. Around 120 Hz is an example starting point from iZotope, not a preset for every voice. If the voice starts sounding thin, back off.
  3. Use de-plosive processing when filtering is not enough. In iZotope RX, open De-plosive, preview the result, and adjust sensitivity, strength, and frequency limit. The guide advises trying extra-gentle passes rather than one extreme pass.
  4. Repair only the stubborn spot if needed. For especially bad localized areas, iZotope recommends Spectral Repair Replace on selected frequency bands. Audrey Martinovich, author of the guide, describes it as a way “to repair specific bands of frequencies.”
  5. Audition the repair in context. Listen to the edited word at normal playback level, then hear it in the full phrase. Compare it with the untreated original and check that the consonant and voice body still sound natural.

Why a filter or generic pop remover may not be enough

A high-pass filter can reduce low-frequency energy, but it cannot necessarily undo distortion caused by the burst. A generic click or pop effect is also not the same as a dedicated de-plosive tool: it may treat a loud transient as a pop, or alter more of the recording than intended. Apply broad or transient processing selectively, and keep the unprocessed version for comparison.

Prevent plosives on the next take

Use a microphone pop filter or windscreen to reduce the air bursts reaching the microphone. This is a capture-time measure: it can help prevent plosives in a future recording, but it cannot repair audio already recorded.
