1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you know the PDF’s password and printing is allowed, you may be able to open it in a browser or built-in PDF viewer, then use Print and choose Save as PDF. This makes a new copy; it does not reliably remove the original file’s security settings. Keep the original and check the copy before relying on it. If you do not know the password, ask the document owner rather than trying to bypass it.
First, identify which password or restriction applies
A PDF may have an open password (also called a user password), which you need to open and read the file, or a permissions password (also called an owner password), which controls restrictions such as printing, editing, or copying. Adobe explains that if both are set, either password can open the PDF, but changing restricted features requires the permissions password. These are different situations: being able to view a file does not necessarily mean you can print it or change its security settings.
Try Print > Save as PDF using a browser or built-in viewer
This no-install workaround is conditional: you must be able to open the PDF, and its settings must allow printing. It creates a printed copy rather than changing the original PDF’s security configuration. Menu names vary by browser and operating system; the steps below are general, not verified instructions for every device.
- Open the local PDF in the browser or PDF viewer already available on your device.
- Enter the password you were given. If you do not know it, contact the owner or sender and request access.
- Open Print. If printing is available, choose a PDF destination such as Save as PDF. If printing is disabled or no PDF destination is available, this route will not work.
- Save a separate copy with a different filename so you retain the original.
- Reopen the copy and inspect it before deleting or sharing anything. Check the pages, text, layout, forms, links, and any signatures or other features you depend on.
A browser-print demonstration published in 2015 showed this approach, but it does not establish current behavior or which PDF features every browser preserves. If the saved copy is incomplete or unsuitable, use an authorized security-settings workflow or ask the document owner for an unrestricted copy. Do not assume this method will work for every PDF.

Choose a route based on your access and needs
| Your situation | What to try | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You know the open password and printing is permitted | Use the browser or viewer’s Print > Save as PDF option. | Produces a new printed copy; feature preservation is not established for every browser or file. |
| You can open the PDF, but printing is blocked | Ask the owner for permission or an unrestricted copy; if authorized and available, use Acrobat’s security settings. | The browser-print route depends on printing being enabled. |
| You want to change the PDF’s original security settings and have the required permission password | Use Acrobat’s documented security-settings workflow. | Adobe says permanent removal requires an Acrobat subscription or free trial; menu labels may vary by version. |
| You do not know the password needed to open the PDF | Contact the document owner and request the password or an accessible copy. | Do not treat printing or an unlocking service as a way to defeat unknown credentials. |
| The PDF is governed by a server-based policy, digital signature, or DRM | Contact the policy author, server administrator, or document owner. | Adobe identifies these as limits on unlocking; server-based policies may be changed only by the policy author or server administrator. |
When direct security-setting changes are needed: Acrobat
Adobe Help’s instructions, last updated September 23, 2025, describe this Acrobat path: All tools > Protect a PDF > Set security properties > Security > Change Settings. In the security settings, clear Require a password to open the document to remove the open password, or clear Restrict editing and printing of the document to remove those permissions restrictions. If prompted, enter the permissions password, confirm the dialogs, and save the PDF to apply the changes. The exact labels can vary by Acrobat version.
Adobe says permanently removing password protection requires an Acrobat subscription or free trial; Reader and mobile versions can open password-protected files but cannot permanently remove their protection. Only remove restrictions when you have authorization. Adobe also says server-based policies may be changed only by their author or a server administrator, and identifies digital signatures and DRM as limitations.

Adobe’s PDF Services API is a developer option, not a no-software workaround for ordinary users: Adobe says the operation requires the document’s owner password.

A hosted unlocking workflow means entrusting the document to that provider. For confidential files, prefer a local route when it meets your needs, or review the provider’s own terms and handling practices before uploading. Adobe states that its online workflow encrypts files in transit and at rest and deletes the unlocked file from its servers after unlocking. That is Adobe’s claim about its service, not evidence about other providers. Adobe’s PDF Services security documentation also states, “All content in transit is encrypted using TLS 1.2 or greater.”
