There is no official household rule requiring you to vacuum a mattress weekly or monthly. Follow its care label and vacuum when needed as part of ordinary cleaning. Routine sanitizing is usually unnecessary at home unless someone is sick or at higher risk; if treatment is needed, use only a method suitable for the mattress and its cover.
How often should you vacuum a mattress?
The official household guidance cited here does not set a mattress-specific vacuuming schedule. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises vacuuming carpets and furniture weekly or more often, but that guidance does not establish a weekly requirement for mattresses. CDC guidance recommends regular HEPA-filter vacuuming as one measure for controlling dust-mite allergens, but it does not give a mattress-only interval.
For ordinary upkeep, follow the mattress maker’s instructions and vacuum when needed. Mattress materials and covers differ, so check the care guidance before using an attachment, applying moisture, or trying a cleaning treatment.
Do you need to sanitize a mattress?
Usually not as part of routine household cleaning. Cleaning removes dirt and impurities and most germs; sanitizing reduces germs to levels considered safe, while disinfecting kills most germs. These terms describe different actions, not interchangeable versions of dusting.

CDC says sanitizing or disinfecting to reduce disease spread at home is likely unnecessary unless someone is sick or at higher risk. If a specific situation calls for treatment, clean first where appropriate, use a product labeled for the mattress surface, and follow its directions as well as the mattress and cover care instructions. CDC’s household cleaning guidance was published January 31, 2025.
What if dust mites or allergies are a concern?
If dust mites trigger asthma, focus on a broader allergen-control routine rather than assuming the mattress needs more frequent vacuuming. CDC recommends allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers, washing bedding weekly and drying it completely, regular vacuuming with a HEPA-filter vacuum, and keeping indoor relative humidity around 30–50%. The EPA also advises dust-proof mattress covers and notes that a HEPA filter can help keep some vacuumed dust from escaping back into the air. A HEPA-filter vacuum and an allergen-proof cover are options for allergen control, not requirements for every household or substitutes for following the mattress maker’s care instructions. When a spill or contamination needs more than routine cleaning
There is no universal home disinfection method for every mattress material or spill in the cited guidance. Do not improvise with bleach, steam, or a general-purpose disinfectant: an unsuitable method can damage the mattress or cover, and the sources do not establish that those treatments are appropriate for all products. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and seek suitable professional guidance if contamination is serious or persistent.
