To transfer data to a new Google Pixel, start the phone’s setup process and follow the prompts to copy from your old Android or iPhone by cable or wirelessly. If the old phone is unavailable, restore from a Google Account backup. Pixel 9 and later also let you add data after setup.
Choose the transfer method that fits your phones

Google says an old Android or Pixel can pair with a new Pixel to transfer wirelessly, by cable, or using both. The cable is optional; follow the options actually shown on your phones because the flow and labels vary by Pixel generation. Google Pixel Phone Help
Prepare both phones
Before beginning, charge both phones, connect them to strong Wi-Fi, keep them close together, and make sure the new Pixel has enough free storage. Google notes that a transfer can pause if the Pixel runs out of space. Where possible, sync apps with your Google Account, save passwords and passkeys, and back up the old phone. Transfer from an Android phone or another Pixel
Use the setup flow
- Turn on the new Pixel and begin setup. When asked, choose the option for a Pixel or Android device.
- For the QR route documented for Pixel 8 and later, follow the new Pixel’s pairing prompts. On the old phone, tap the setup notification and scan the QR code shown on the new Pixel.
- For a wired transfer, unlock the old phone and connect it to the Pixel with a USB-C data cable when prompted. Follow the on-screen steps.
- Review the available categories and choose whether to copy all offered data or only selected items. Keep both devices connected and follow any remaining prompts.
Google provides separate cable instructions for Pixel 8 and later and for Pixel Fold, Pixel 7 Pro, and earlier models. Some older setup screens require tapping the “Copy apps & data” image five times to reveal the cable option. Older-generation Wi-Fi steps also have version requirements: Google’s instructions specify Android 5 or later on the previous Android phone and Android 12 or later on the Pixel for that route. Transfer after setup on Pixel 9 and later
If initial setup is complete, Google’s documented post-setup route on Pixel 9 and later is Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start. Follow the prompts to add data from the previous device. Google’s transfer troubleshooting
Transfer from an iPhone
Google’s current instructions say Pixel 10 and later can transfer most iPhone data, including passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks, texts, photos, contacts, apps, and calendars. There is an important photo limitation: in Google’s described direct iCloud flow, only photos saved locally on the iPhone transfer. For photos stored in iCloud, Google suggests syncing them through Google Photos or using Apple’s iCloud migration tool. Google’s transfer instructions
For cable combinations that need an adapter, Google’s Quick Switch Adapter guidance says a USB-C to USB-C cable can be used for Android or newer iOS devices; an adapter may help with some older iPhone or USB-A cable setups. What transfers—and what may need separate attention
Google lists these categories among the data that can transfer from Android to Pixel in the scenarios described in its instructions:
- Google Account information, contacts, calendar events, passwords and passkeys
- Text messages and attachments, call history, photos and videos
- Files and folders, music and other audio files
- Apps, Wi-Fi login details, device settings, and wallpaper
That list does not mean every app or setting will be recreated exactly. Google specifies important conditions: apps transfer when downloaded or purchased through Google Play; notes and alarms transfer when they use Google apps such as Keep; and passwords and passkeys depend on Google Password Manager. Restore from a Google Account backup
If the old phone is unavailable but a Google Account backup exists, connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi during setup, sign in to the same account, select the previous device backup, and choose the data to restore. Google says this restore route supports only one previous device. If you need to restore from a different source, its instructions say the Pixel must be reset. On Pixel 9 and later, you can instead use the post-setup Android Switch route to add data. Google’s transfer troubleshooting

Fix common transfer problems
The phones will not pair
Update and restart the old phone, then try pairing again. If the wireless option is missing, the previous device may not support that route. Follow the connection choices presented by the Pixel rather than treating wireless transfer as available on every model. Google’s transfer troubleshooting
The Pixel says “Try another cable”
Reconnect both ends and use a cable that supports data transfer; some cables charge but do not carry data. Google notes that an adapter may help for certain older iPhone or USB-A combinations. Google’s transfer troubleshooting; Google’s Quick Switch Adapter guidance
The transfer stops or misses data
Check that the Pixel has enough storage and that both phones remain connected as instructed. If setup has already finished, Pixel 9 and later have the documented Android Switch option for adding data after setup. For older Pixels, recovery may require returning to setup or using another supported restore route; check Google’s model-specific instructions before resetting the phone.
