Managing leverage risk starts before you open a position: identify the exact contract, calculate the notional exposure, learn its margin and liquidation rules, and decide how much you can afford to lose. Leverage magnifies gains and losses relative to the margin posted; no leverage setting, stop order, or liquidation buffer makes a trade safe.
What are you trading: spot margin, dated futures, or perpetuals?
“Crypto with leverage” can mean different products. In spot margin, you borrow funds to buy or sell the underlying asset, and borrowing terms and repayment matter. A dated futures contract is an agreement with an expiry; it may be cash-settled or deliver the underlying. A perpetual futures contract has no expiry and may use funding payments to keep its price near a reference market. Their settlement, costs, and liquidation rules are not interchangeable.
Before trading, read the specific contract’s current terms. Check what asset or currency settles the position, what index or other reference price is used, whether the product expires, and what borrowing or funding charges apply. The CFTC notes that many virtual-currency futures are cash-settled and advises customers to understand the settlement index or auction price. Its virtual-currency trading advisory also describes risks that apply beyond a position’s margin calculation.
How does leverage change the risk?
Leverage lets a smaller margin deposit control a larger notional position. For example, a position with $10,000 of notional exposure and $1,000 of posted margin has exposure equal to 10 times that margin. A 1% move in the underlying corresponds to a $100 change in the position’s value before fees and other contract effects—10% of the $1,000 margin. The same relationship works against a losing position as well as for a winning one. This illustration is arithmetic, not a prediction of a contract’s exact profit or loss.

The CFTC warns that virtual-currency volatility amplifies profits and losses in margined futures and that customers can lose more than their initial investment. Initial margin is the collateral needed to open or maintain a position under the venue’s rules; it is not a cap on possible loss. A contract’s actual requirements and settlement mechanics determine what may be owed.
How much leverage should I use?
There is no universally safe leverage amount. The sources cited here do not establish a generally suitable setting or trade size for an individual. A lower leverage setting can reduce the initial margin required for a given notional position only if you keep the position size fixed; it does not make a large position small. Conversely, keeping the margin fixed while increasing leverage increases the exposure controlled by that margin.

Work from the amount of loss you could withstand, not the maximum leverage a platform allows. First choose a notional size you can explain and afford to risk, then check the corresponding margin, maintenance requirement, liquidation mechanics, costs, and plausible adverse price moves. Do not treat the platform’s maximum leverage as a target.
How do I avoid liquidation when trading crypto with leverage?
You cannot guarantee that a position will avoid liquidation. You can reduce the likelihood of reaching the venue’s liquidation conditions by controlling exposure and understanding the rules, but fast price moves, changing requirements, execution conditions, and costs can defeat a planned buffer.

Check maintenance margin and position tiers
Maintenance margin is the collateral threshold required to keep a position open. It may depend on the position’s notional size and tier, and a venue can change its requirements. Binance’s USDⓈ-M Futures margin guidance describes tiered maintenance-margin calculations for its product. That is an example of one venue’s rules, not a universal schedule. Locate the current maintenance-margin table for your exact contract and account before trading.
Know the liquidation trigger and price reference
Liquidation is governed by the venue’s rules and a specified price reference; it is not necessarily triggered by the last price visible on a chart. Binance says its futures liquidation process uses mark price and explains that liquidation may begin when the mark price reaches the displayed liquidation price. Its liquidation protocols also warn that volatile conditions can make the execution price differ from the initial calculation. Check whether your contract uses mark, index, last, or another reference, and how it handles partial liquidation, liquidation fees, insurance funds, or auto-deleveraging.

As a venue-specific illustration, Binance’s hypothetical example uses a 1 BTC notional position entered at $55,000 with 20x leverage and shows a long liquidation price of $50,200 and a short liquidation price of $59,750. Binance’s page was updated 2026-01-02; these figures are not typical distances, recommendations, or values that apply to another account or contract. See its liquidation example for the example’s assumptions.
Reduce exposure before adding collateral
Reducing position size lowers notional exposure. Binance’s margin guidance also discusses increasing margin before collateral falls below the maintenance requirement, but adding margin exposes more of your funds and does not remove the possibility of loss or liquidation. Decide in advance how much collateral, if any, you are willing to put at risk; do not add funds automatically in response to a falling position.

A stop order may help execute an exit under its order conditions, but it does not guarantee a fill at the stop price, especially in a fast or illiquid market. Notifications and liquidation buffers are monitoring aids, not protection against all losses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between cross margin and isolated margin?
The distinction is how collateral is allocated under a venue’s rules. With isolated margin, collateral is assigned to a particular position; losses on that position generally put that allocated margin at risk, subject to contract terms and fees. With cross margin, eligible collateral may be shared across positions in the relevant account or margin pool. That can give a position more collateral before liquidation, while also exposing a broader pool of funds to losses.
Exact behavior varies by platform, account type, and contract. Confirm which balances can support a position, whether unrealized gains or losses affect other positions, and what happens during liquidation. Neither mode eliminates trading risk, and choosing isolated margin does not necessarily limit every possible liability to the displayed margin amount.
What other risks and costs should you include?
- Volatility and execution: Crypto markets can move sharply, and gaps, thin liquidity, slippage, or flash crashes can produce an exit worse than expected. The CFTC also identifies manipulation and cyber risks among virtual-currency cash-market concerns.
- Fees and carrying costs: Include trading fees, borrowing charges for spot margin, or funding payments for perpetuals. Rates and fees vary; consult the live contract and fee information rather than assuming a fixed rate.
- Contract tracking and settlement: A derivative may not move exactly with the spot market. A joint SEC/CFTC staff alert about funds trading in Bitcoin futures notes that futures exposure can differ from spot-price movements. Its discussion is about funds, so it should not be treated as a description of every retail futures or perpetual contract.
- Venue and jurisdiction: Confirm that the product is available and permitted where you live, what regulator—if any—oversees the relevant activity, how customer assets and complaints are handled, and what protections actually apply. A regulator’s oversight of one product or venue does not establish supervision of every crypto cash market.
Pre-trade checklist
- Can you identify whether the product is spot margin, dated futures, or perpetual futures, and explain its settlement or repayment terms?
- Have you calculated notional exposure and the margin required under the current contract specifications?
- Do you know the maintenance-margin tiers and the price reference that triggers liquidation?
- Have you checked liquidation fees, partial-liquidation rules, insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging procedures, and any venue-specific margin mode behavior?
- Have you accounted for fees, borrowing or funding charges, slippage, liquidity, and the possibility of a fast move beyond your planned exit?
- Can you accept the full possible loss, including the possibility that it exceeds the initial margin?
The CFTC customer advisory states, “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy,” and advises: “Do not invest in products or strategies you do not understand.” Its guidance is educational, not individualized advice. Exchange documentation explains that exchange’s own products and may change; check the live rules before placing an order.
