If you want to experience Halo primarily as a game series, start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). Halo Support recommends that campaign for newcomers following game release order. If you would rather begin with a book, read Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach; it introduces the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief’s early story, but it is optional context, not a prerequisite for playing.

There is no single required route through Halo. Choose based on whether you want to play or read first, and whether release order or background lore matters more to you.

Should you start with a Halo novel or a game?

For most newcomers whose goal is to play Halo, begin with the games. The first campaign in release order provides the intended introduction without asking you to read supplementary fiction first. For a reader who wants setting and character background before playing, The Fall of Reach is a strong novel-first option.

Halo Studios has said there is no single right answer to the question of how a newcomer should approach the lore, and points to several accessible entry points. The books expand the universe, but they are not generally assigned as homework before a game. For example, Halo Studios described Shadows of Reach as a lead-in to Halo Infinite while explicitly saying it is not required reading. See Halo Studios’ Canon Fodder: Foundations.

Why The Fall of Reach works as a novel-first start

Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach was published on October 30, 2001, before the first Halo game. It gives readers background on the Spartan-II program, Reach, and the Master Chief’s early history. Halo Studios’ book guide groups it at the beginning of the original novels, making it a natural first choice if you want to read rather than play first.

The original novel sequence continues with Halo: The Flood (William C. Dietz, 2003), a novelization of Combat Evolved that adds other perspectives; Halo: First Strike (Eric Nylund, 2003), which follows events after Combat Evolved; and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (Eric Nylund, 2006). This is a useful route for readers who want to stay near the early game-era stories, not a mandatory reading list for every player.

What to read after your first Halo book

Halo’s book catalog is organized around different eras, characters, and story groups—including the Forerunner Saga, Kilo-5, Master Chief and Blue Team, Alpha-Nine, Gray Team, the Ferrets, and stand-alone stories. After one book, use the official Halo book guide to follow the character or era that interests you instead of treating the whole library as one sequence.

If you are interested in Halo Infinite

Halo: The Rubicon Protocol by Kelly Gay (August 9, 2022) follows survivors after the UNSC Infinity is ambushed on Zeta Halo. Halo: Edge of Dawn, also by Kelly Gay (December 16, 2025), is set after the Master Chief defeats Escharum. Both are targeted follow-on reads for readers interested in that part of the timeline, rather than opening books newcomers need before playing.

If you want shorter fiction

Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One was listed by Halo Studios as released May 26, 2026, in trade paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats. The collection brings together more than thirty short stories, including previously online stories and new tales. It can suit a reader who prefers shorter pieces, though it is not a replacement for the early-game introduction or a required first book.

Is there a required order for Halo novels and games?

No. You can start with a game and add books when a character, conflict, or era catches your interest, or read The Fall of Reach first for background. The available official guidance does not establish one prescribed sequence that every newcomer must follow across both media. In particular, a novel described as a lead-in can still be optional, as Halo Studios says of Shadows of Reach and Halo Infinite.

What about starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved or Halo Infinite?

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the original campaign announced for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, with a stated release date of July 28, 2026. Because that date has passed, the announcement alone does not confirm whether it is currently available in your region or on your preferred platform; verify a live platform listing before buying.

Halo Infinite was positioned as a possible entry point and a new chapter, but it still belongs to the broader Halo continuity. It may be a sensible choice if it is the campaign you can access or the story that interests you most; it is not the same as following the series from its original game beginning.
