Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStore home security footage using a method your camera supports, then set a practical retention period and learn how to find and export a clip before you need one. A microSD card is a simple local option for compatible cameras; vendor cloud recording can provide app-accessible history; and a NAS or network video recorder (NVR) can centralize recordings when the cameras and software are compatible.
Choose a storage method your camera supports
Check the camera’s manual or manufacturer support page before buying a card, recorder, or storage plan. Storage options differ by model: Xiaomi lists microSD, Xiaomi Home Secure cloud, and NAS options for its Smart Camera C300, while TP-Link documents local microSD recording and cloud clips for supported Kasa cameras. These examples do not establish support for other models. Xiaomi Smart Camera C300 support; TP-Link Kasa recording support.
| Method | What it offers | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Camera microSD | Local recording accessed through a supported camera or app, without a separate storage server. | Confirm supported card capacity, format, recording mode, and installation requirements. On TP-Link’s documented Kasa setup, the camera overwrites the oldest local files when the card is full; behavior can vary by system. Export important clips promptly. |
| Vendor cloud | App-accessible recordings that may remain off-site if the camera is damaged or stolen. | Subscription, retention, and export options depend on the vendor, region, and plan. Check what happens during power or internet interruptions, and secure the account. Xiaomi says Xiaomi Home Secure requires a subscription, with limited free and premium plans; TP-Link says Kasa Care retention follows the plan. |
| NAS or network recorder | Centralized storage for multiple compatible cameras, with features that may include encryption and backup. | Requires compatible cameras and software, sufficient network and storage, configuration, and ongoing maintenance. Backup to cloud or another location is a separate setup and may add cost. Synology Surveillance Station documents recording, encryption, edge recording, and backup destinations. |
| NVR with internal drive | Dedicated local recording for a compatible camera system. | Check camera compatibility, supported drive type and capacity, export instructions, and overwrite settings. A recorder kept at home may be lost or damaged with the property; consider whether a separate copy is needed. |
Do not assume cloud is inherently safer or less safe than local storage. Compare account protections, encryption claims, recovery options, remote access, provider retention, and whether a separate copy exists. Each method has different dependencies: a card can be lost with the camera, a home NAS or NVR can be lost with the equipment, and cloud access depends on the provider, account, connection, and plan. The available documentation does not establish a universal risk ranking.
Estimate capacity and choose how long to keep recordings
There is no universal card size or number of retention days that suits every home. Capacity depends on the number of cameras, resolution, bitrate, whether recording is continuous or event-based, motion activity, and overwrite settings. Use the camera or recorder maker’s documentation and a calculation based on your actual setup rather than a generic “days per card” estimate.

Choose the shortest retention period that still lets you discover and report the kinds of incidents the cameras are intended to capture. Consider how long it might take you to notice an event, available storage, and privacy; revisit the choice if the camera’s purpose changes. UK domestic CCTV guidance says not to keep footage longer than necessary to protect property, and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) cautions that a device’s ability to retain footage for six months does not, by itself, justify keeping it that long. These are UK guidance examples, not universal legal rules. UK Government domestic CCTV guidance; ICO guidance for people using domestic CCTV.
Set up recording and a review routine
- Set the date, time, and timezone. Check them after setup and after changes to power or network configuration so an event time can be matched to the recording. UK Government guidance specifically advises keeping the system date and time accurate.
- Confirm recording and storage status. In the camera app or recorder, verify that recording is enabled for the intended schedule and that the system reports usable space. Check how full storage is handled, including whether old recordings are overwritten.
- Find out how the interface organizes footage. Before an incident, learn whether you search a timeline, activity tab, or event filters, and whether continuous recordings and motion events appear separately. Exact controls differ by system.
- Practice an export. Find a short test clip, export it to a known folder or approved external medium, and play the exported file to confirm it works. GOV.UK advises owners to read the manual and learn how to export footage; its CCTV buyers’ toolkit identifies review aids and external-media export as system features to assess.
- Make a simple record for important exports. Note the camera, date and time range, export date, storage location, and anyone who received a shared copy. A brief record helps you find the right file and track copies later.
- Clear clips when they no longer serve their purpose. Include downloaded files and other copies in your cleanup. If footage relates to a legal request, insurance claim, or police investigation, follow the applicable local process and preserve the relevant original or export as appropriate.
If a camera uses rolling storage, do not assume an incident clip will remain available until you get around to reviewing it. TP-Link’s Kasa documentation, last updated July 1, 2026, says the oldest local files are overwritten when the microSD card fills. Check your own system’s manual for its behavior and save any needed clip promptly. TP-Link Kasa recording support.
