Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To find a specific article, search its exact title in quotation marks first. If that misses or returns several possibilities, search a distinctive part of the title with the author’s surname, then confirm the result using its author, publication, and year. For scholarly articles, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Crossref offer different lookup options; finding a citation does not necessarily mean the full text is free.
How do I find a specific article?
- Search the exact title. Put the title in quotation marks in a search engine or scholarly search service. If you may have remembered a word incorrectly, try a distinctive phrase from the title instead. PubMed accepts an article title in its search box, and its citation sensor can use fuzzy matching when a query includes an incorrect term. See PubMed Help.
- Add identifying details. If the title search is uncertain, combine distinctive title words with the author’s surname. Add the journal, year, or subject if the author’s name is common or the search returns too many results.
- Check a scholarly lookup service. Choose a service suited to the work: PubMed for biomedical citations, Google Scholar for scholarly search across subjects, or Crossref for publication metadata. Their coverage and search fields differ.
- Verify the candidate. Compare the title, author list, journal or other publication, and year with the information you have. If several records seem plausible, inspect their publication details or DOI record rather than assuming the first close match is correct.
- Look for the full text separately. Open the publisher’s record or use a library link if one appears. A search result or citation may identify an article without providing free access to its full text.
How can I find an article by its title?
Enter the full title in quotation marks to focus the search on that phrase, where the service supports phrase searching. PubMed recommends phrase search when you need terms in a particular order, and its help describes title-based citation lookup. If the exact title produces no useful result, remove uncertain or generic words and search a rarer phrase from the title.
For biomedical literature, try the title in PubMed. For a broader scholarly search, Google Scholar provides advanced search fields for title and publication, as well as an author operator. Crossref supports article-title queries, including fuzzy matching. A similar-looking title is only a candidate: check its authors and publication information.
How do I find an article if I only know the author?
Search the author’s surname with a subject term, journal name, or approximate publication year if you know one. If the name is common, include initials and a distinctive word or phrase you remember from the title. Google Scholar documents the author: operator and advanced author search; its Search Help explains those options.

For a more targeted scholarly record search, combine the author and likely title words in Crossref’s author/article-title query. Crossref cautions that a query can match multiple records, so use the returned publication details to distinguish them. If you know the journal but are unsure of its exact name, the NLM Catalog Help describes journal-title and author lookup, including variations in initials and suffixes.
Which search service should I try?
| Service | Useful when | Search options or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PubMed | You are looking for a biomedical article or citation. | Accepts a title or citation details such as author, journal, and year; supports phrase searching. See PubMed Help. |
| Google Scholar | You want to search scholarly material across subjects. | Offers author and advanced search options, including title and publication fields. A result may show a library link, but a citation does not guarantee free full text. See Search Help. |
| Crossref | You want to look up publication metadata using an author and article title. | Supports fuzzy title matching; multiple plausible matches can make a result ambiguous. Check the publication details. See Author / article title query. |
| NLM Catalog | You need to identify or look up a journal, including name variations. | Supports journal-title and author lookup, including variations in initials and suffixes. See NLM Catalog Help. |
What should I try if the first search misses?
- Replace the full title with a distinctive phrase, then add the author’s surname or journal.
- Try plausible alternate spellings, punctuation, subtitle wording, or author initials if your remembered citation may differ from the published version. These are useful search tactics, not a guarantee that a particular service indexes every variation.
- In PubMed, remove overly specific terms if too few results appear. If there are too many, add more specific terms or use available filters such as publication date, article type, or full-text availability, as described in PubMed Help.
- In Crossref, include both author and title when possible, and investigate multiple possible matches instead of choosing one based on a similar title alone. See Crossref’s query guidance.
How do I confirm I found the right article?
Check the details you know against the record: title, author list, journal or publication, and year. A partial title may lead to related work or another article with a nearly identical name. When results remain ambiguous, compare the publication details or DOI record before citing or relying on the article. Treat access as a separate question: follow a library link, if available, or check the publisher’s page to see whether the full text can be obtained.
