A “yes” vote on strike authorization does not necessarily mean a strike will start. What it permits, who can call a strike, and what happens to your pay, benefits, and job depend on your union’s rules, your contract, and the law that applies to your workplace. Before voting, get those answers in writing and plan for the possibility of losing regular wages.

Does a strike authorization vote mean we’re going on strike?

No—not by itself. A strike authorization vote and an actual strike are separate steps. Depending on the union’s rules and the ballot language, a “yes” may give a designated union body authority to call a strike later, or it may record members’ support for the bargaining position. The vote does not, on its own, establish that a strike is certain or set a start date.

Do not confuse a strike authorization vote with a contract ratification vote. Authorization concerns whether a strike may be called under the applicable rules; ratification concerns whether members approve a proposed contract. Read the ballot notice and ask the union for a written explanation of exactly what a “yes” and “no” mean.

What does a “yes” vote actually authorize?

There is no single authorization procedure or threshold for every union. Check the current union constitution, local bylaws, ballot notice, and any bargaining-unit rules to find out:

  • Whether the vote authorizes a strike call, expresses support, or does both.
  • Which body may call the strike: the membership, local executive board, bargaining committee, or another body.
  • What must happen first, such as an impasse, an employer’s refusal of demands, another vote, or advance notice.
  • Whether the authorization expires or is limited to particular bargaining issues or dates.

For example, the Teamsters’ Corewell Health East FAQ describes its authorization as giving union leadership and stewards the option to call a strike if negotiations reach impasse or the employer refuses demands. It also says authorization does not make a strike certain. That describes the named bargaining unit, not a rule for every union.

The Teamsters Constitution adopted in 2021 illustrates why workers should check their own governing documents: it describes secret-ballot procedures and circumstances in which a majority of affected voting members can authorize a strike, while giving a local executive board discretion over when to call an authorized strike. It also recognizes that legal conditions may apply. Constitutions and local rules can change, so confirm the version currently in force.

Who decides when a strike starts?

Find the decision-maker and the conditions for a call in the union’s rules—not just in campaign materials or verbal explanations. A vote may authorize a later decision without requiring leaders to make that decision immediately. Ask whether members will receive notice before a call, whether there is a further membership vote, and what events could lead the union to delay or cancel a strike.

Also ask the bargaining committee what issues remain unresolved and what it expects authorization to accomplish. A vote can signal member support and bargaining readiness, but it cannot guarantee a settlement or prevent a strike. The available sources establish no universal interval between an authorization vote and a strike.

What does our contract say about striking?

Read the full collective-bargaining agreement, especially its no-strike language, term and expiration date, grievance and arbitration provisions, and any special notice terms. Ask the union how those terms apply to the proposed action and whether the contract is still in effect. A no-strike clause may affect whether a strike is protected under federal labor law; the result can depend on the clause, the circumstances, and applicable exceptions.

The Teamsters’ general FAQ says most Teamsters contracts have no-strike clauses and describes that union’s typical process. That is not evidence that your contract contains such a clause. The agreement covering your bargaining unit is the document to check.

How could the law affect protection and return to work?

For workers covered by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) explains that legal protection can depend on the strike’s purpose, timing, and conduct. Its outline is useful orientation, not a decision about an individual case; the NLRB notes that the outline has not been reviewed or approved by the Board and may omit exceptions or be affected by later legal changes.

Strike category described by the NLRB General return-to-work rule
Economic strike: workers seek economic concessions such as changes to wages, hours, or working conditions. Workers retain employee status and cannot be discharged for participating in a lawful economic strike. An employer may hire permanent replacements in certain circumstances; a striker’s reinstatement may then depend on vacancies and other facts.
Unfair-labor-practice (ULP) strike: workers protest an employer’s unfair labor practice. Strikers generally have stronger reinstatement rights than economic strikers. If a striker is unlawfully denied reinstatement after making an unconditional request to return, the NLRB may order reinstatement and monetary relief.

These are broad categories, not labels workers can safely assign to a complicated dispute without advice. The NLRB says a strike may be unlawful if it has an unlawful purpose, violates a no-strike provision, or involves serious misconduct. Its examples of misconduct include physically blocking access, threatening violence, and attacking management. It also says strikers must take reasonable precautions against foreseeable, aggravated, imminent danger to employer property from a sudden work stoppage.

Coverage matters, too. The NLRB lists public-sector employees, agricultural and domestic workers, independent contractors, supervisors, and rail and air carrier employees covered by the Railway Labor Act among groups excluded from NLRA coverage or treated separately. Public employees and workers in transportation or other specially regulated sectors should identify the applicable labor law and agency rather than assume the NLRA rules apply.

Special notice rule for health-care institutions

Under NLRA Section 8(g), a labor organization must provide a health-care institution and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service at least 10 days’ written notice before a strike, picketing, or other concerted refusal to work. The NLRB summarizes this federal rule; confirm how it applies to your workplace and action with your union or qualified labor counsel.

Will I get strike pay?

Do not budget around another union’s benefit rate. Ask your local for the rules that apply to your bargaining unit, including the amount, eligibility, when payments begin, payment schedule, picket-duty requirements, and whether local funds add to any benefit. Also ask whether a benefit is guaranteed or depends on fund availability or other conditions.

As a union-specific example, a Teamsters FAQ accessed October 7, 2026 states that its International strike benefit is five times monthly dues, with a $150 weekly minimum, and says local benefits are determined locally. This is not a universal strike-pay amount and may change. The Teamsters FAQ also says regular wages stop during a strike.

Will I keep health insurance and other benefits?

Do not assume that health coverage, prescriptions, dependent coverage, retirement contributions, or other benefits continue unchanged during a strike. The general sources cited here do not establish a continuation rule that applies to every plan. Ask your employer’s plan administrator, your union, and any relevant benefit fund for answers specific to your plan and the proposed strike. Confirm premium responsibility, payment deadlines, dependent coverage, and what happens if a payment is late.

What should I check before casting a ballot?

  1. Get the ballot explained in writing. Confirm whether this is authorization, ratification, an advisory vote, or some combination, and what each possible vote authorizes.
  2. Identify who controls a strike call. Check the current constitution and local bylaws for the decision-maker, required conditions, any further vote or notice, and whether authorization expires.
  3. Read your contract. Locate the no-strike clause, agreement term and expiration, grievance or arbitration provisions, and any notice requirements. Ask how they apply to the proposed action.
  4. Confirm which law covers your workplace. Ask whether the NLRA applies or another labor statute governs, and whether health-care, public-sector, transportation, or employer-specific rules matter.
  5. Make an income plan. Estimate how your household would manage without ordinary wages, then verify strike-pay eligibility and payment details with your local.
  6. Get plan-specific benefit answers. Contact the plan administrator, union, and relevant fund about insurance and other benefits, including premiums and deadlines.
  7. Understand conduct and safety limits. Ask the union what lawful picketing and strike participation require. Avoid threats, violence, property destruction, and physical obstruction.
  8. Ask about the bargaining situation. Find out which issues remain open and what the bargaining team believes authorization could change; do not treat a vote as a prediction of whether or when a strike will occur.

Where to get case-specific answers

Start with your union representative and the actual documents governing your bargaining unit: ballot notice, current union constitution, local bylaws, and collective-bargaining agreement. For questions about NLRA coverage or federal strike protections, consult the NLRB’s The Right to Strike outline and contact the relevant labor agency. Workers covered by other laws should identify the agency responsible for that statute. If a no-strike clause, legal coverage, or return-to-work rights are disputed, seek advice from a qualified labor attorney before relying on a general summary.
