If Bitcoin is below what you paid, being underwater does not by itself mean you should sell—or hold. Reassess whether the position still fits your financial needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, and overall portfolio. If you sell, check the U.S. tax and recordkeeping consequences before you act. This is general U.S.-oriented information, not individualized financial or tax advice.

Start with your current situation, not your purchase price

Your purchase price can feel like a target Bitcoin must reach before you can make a decision. But it does not determine whether keeping the investment makes sense now. Focus on what you own, what you need the money for, and how much more loss you could withstand.

  • Would you choose this position at its current size if you did not already own it? This helps separate today’s decision from the urge to get back to your purchase price.
  • Could you withstand a further large decline? Consider whether that would affect near-term expenses or other financial needs.
  • Has your reason for buying changed? Revisit the assumptions behind the decision rather than relying on a hope of recovery.
  • Is Bitcoin an outsized share of your investments? The SEC says diversification means investing in a variety of assets to lower overall portfolio risk; an appropriate asset mix depends on risk tolerance and investment timeframe. See Investor.gov Tips for 2026.

The SEC’s Bitcoin and other virtual currency-related investment alert discusses risks and fraud warning signs. Neither it nor the diversification guidance predicts Bitcoin’s future price or determines the right action for your circumstances.

There is no universally suitable hold-or-sell choice. Use the factors below to assess your options rather than treating either action as a rule.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Factor Question to consider
Further downside Can you tolerate a further decline without jeopardizing money you need?
Time horizon and cash needs When might you need this money, and would holding fit that timeframe?
Portfolio concentration How large is the Bitcoin position relative to your other investments?
Tax and records If you sell or otherwise dispose of the asset, what transaction records and tax calculations will you need?
What you own Do you hold Bitcoin directly, or an investment product with its own terms? Check that product’s official documents for its fees, custody arrangements, and risks; those details depend on the specific product.

Know when a loss becomes a tax matter

For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. A drop in the quoted price while you still hold Bitcoin is different from selling or otherwise disposing of it: the price decline alone generally does not establish a deductible loss. The Taxpayer Advocate Service describes a loss as requiring a closed and completed transaction, such as a sale or exchange, and notes that a frozen account or assets involved in bankruptcy proceedings do not, in the circumstances it describes, create a deductible loss before such a transaction. Unusual situations may need separate tax advice. See the IRS’s digital asset guidance and the Taxpayer Advocate Service’s Digital Assets page.

If you sell Bitcoin for U.S. dollars

The IRS says to compare your adjusted basis with the amount realized to calculate gain or loss. Amount realized includes the cash received and the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by allocable digital-asset transaction costs. Those costs can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. For details, see the IRS Frequently asked questions on digital asset transactions.

Keep records that support your calculation

Save purchase confirmations, dates and amounts, wallet-transfer details, sale records, and fee records. In an IRS Tax Tip dated January 28, 2026, the IRS said most broker statements for 2025 digital-asset transactions would not include basis. Taxpayers may need to calculate it themselves, and must report related income, gains, or losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. Do not assume a broker statement provides complete basis information. See the IRS’s reminders for taxpayers about digital assets.

Watch for pressure and recovery scams

A steep loss can make a promise of fast recovery especially tempting. The SEC identifies guaranteed high returns, unsolicited pitches, unlicensed sellers, pressure to act immediately, and offers that sound too good to be true as warning signs. Its crypto scam alert also describes schemes involving social or messaging contact, pressure to send crypto, and demands for extra fees or taxes to withdraw funds.

Be especially wary of anyone who says they can recover your losses in exchange for more money or crypto. A purported recovery service may ask for private keys or additional funds. Do not share credentials or send crypto based on such a claim. The SEC explains recovery-related risks in its investor bulletin on how victims of securities law violations may recover money.

When to get tax or investment help

If you have sold Bitcoin, need to reconstruct your basis, or have complicated transactions, a qualified tax professional with digital-asset experience may help you apply current rules to your records. Tax treatment depends on the facts, and the federal guidance above does not cover non-U.S. tax law or every unusual loss situation.
