A 1.4× teleconverter increases effective focal length by 40% and, in the f/4 examples here, reduces the maximum aperture to f/5.6—one stop less light. Autofocus behavior and image quality depend on the exact camera, lens, and converter combination, so check the manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than assuming either will be unaffected.
What “drop-in teleconverter” means
“Drop-in” can refer to different equipment, so it helps to distinguish the parts before considering their effects. A teleconverter is an optical device that increases a lens’s effective focal length. Some lenses have a built-in converter that can be engaged without removing the lens; other converters attach between a camera and lens. A drop-in filter is a separate filter fitted into a lens’s filter holder—it is not a teleconverter.
For example, Canon’s EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x has a built-in 1.4× extender and a separate 52mm drop-in filter size, as shown in Canon’s specifications. Nikon’s AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR has a switchable built-in teleconverter. The distinctions matter: a filter does not provide the extra reach of an optical teleconverter, and a built-in switch is a feature of a particular lens design.
How much extra reach does a 1.4× teleconverter give?
Multiply the lens’s focal length by 1.4. Nikon lists its 180-400mm lens as 180-400mm without the built-in converter and 252-560mm with it engaged. Canon lists 200-400mm at 1× and 280-560mm at 1.4× for its integrated-extender lens. These are specifications for those lenses, not a promise that every lens or camera system supports a converter.

The Nikon design can be switched while the photographer grips the camera and looks through the viewfinder, according to Nikon’s 2018 announcement. That handling benefit applies to this integrated design; it should not be assumed for detachable converters.
Does a teleconverter affect autofocus?
It can. Autofocus availability and performance depend on the camera body, lens, converter, effective maximum aperture, and shooting conditions. A converter’s extra reach does not guarantee that the camera will retain autofocus, tracking, or the same focusing behavior.

- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Nikon USA’s teleconverter compatibility chart states that autofocus is unavailable when the built-in converter is engaged on the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR. The same chart lists camera-dependent f/8 autofocus limitations for other combinations. These are system-specific qualifications, not a universal rule for all teleconverters.
Before relying on autofocus, look up the exact camera, lens, and converter combination in the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation. Nikon also provides a download page for the 180-400mm lens; consult the current support information for any model- or firmware-specific guidance.

How much light does a 1.4× teleconverter cost?
In the two f/4 lens examples above, engaging the 1.4× converter changes the maximum aperture to f/5.6. That is one stop less light at a given shutter speed and ISO. The camera can meter through a supported converter and adjust exposure automatically, so exposure compensation is not automatically required.
If you want to keep the same exposure, the camera can use a slower shutter speed, a higher ISO, or a combination of the two. For fast-moving subjects, slowing the shutter may cause motion blur, making higher ISO the more practical compromise. The effect depends on the scene and settings; a teleconverter does not dictate one fixed exposure outcome.

- 2x telephoto lens converter: For smartphones with a built in 5x telephoto camera, this converter doubles optical zoom from 5x (120 mm equivalent) to 10x (240 mm equivalent) for distant shooting without digital cropping or image loss
- For 5X telephoto cameras only: Not for main camera; cell phone accessories compatible with Vivo X200 Ultra Xiaomi 15 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S26 S25 Ultra Android iPhone 18 Pro Max 18 Pro 17 16 Pro/Pro Max; select 5X before use if optical zoom is below 5X
- Compact and lightweight: Compared to standard external zoom lenses, this 2x converter is shorter and lighter; it features a 17mm thread for 17mm threaded phone cages, cases, and lens clips; content creator essential photography and filming accessories
- Multicoated optical glass: 7 elements in 5 groups of HD optical glass and multiple nanocoatings reduce glare and distortion, resist water, fingerprints, and scratches, and ensure excellent light transmission; a cleaning cloth is included
- Important note: Different phone brands may require different zoom levels to activate the telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, apply the included stickers to cover the wide angle lens to prevent lens switching caused by light sensor interference
Do not confuse this aperture change with stabilization. Nikon reported that the VR mechanism in its 180-400mm lens provides camera-shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop shutter-speed increase. Nikon Corporation’s 2018 figure is based on CIPA standards, using a full-size 35mm-equivalent sensor at maximum telephoto position, and is specified to apply with or without the built-in converter. It is a manufacturer-published figure for that lens, not a general teleconverter benefit. Nikon’s announcement gives the conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a teleconverter reduce image quality?
There is no reliable universal amount of image-quality loss to apply to every setup. A converter adds optical elements and enlarges the image projected by the lens, but the result depends on the specific optical design and lens-converter pairing. The useful question is how that exact combination performs—not whether every teleconverter makes every image a particular amount softer.

Nikon provides separate MTF charts for its 180-400mm lens with and without its built-in converter on the product specifications page. Its 2018 announcement describes optical features including a fluorite element, eight ED elements, and coatings intended to suppress ghosting and flare, and presents the lens as designed for sharp, detailed rendering. Those are manufacturer materials, not an independent comparative test or proof of a universal result.
For a practical comparison, evaluate matched images made with and without the converter using the same lens, camera, focus method, subject, and processing. Reliable tests of the exact combination can also help. Consider whether the added reach gives you useful subject detail in your real shooting conditions, rather than judging the converter in isolation.
Quick Recap
What to check before using one
- Identify the device: determine whether it is a built-in or detachable teleconverter, or a drop-in filter.
- Confirm compatibility: check the exact camera body, lens, and converter in current manufacturer documentation.
- Verify autofocus behavior: check AF availability and any camera-specific aperture limitations; do not infer them from another system.
- Plan exposure: account for the maximum-aperture change and decide whether shutter speed or ISO can absorb the one-stop difference.
- Assess image quality: seek evidence for the exact optical combination, or compare matched images, rather than relying on a blanket sharpness claim.
- Check handling: a built-in switch may allow conversion without removing the lens, but this is not true of every design.
