For Sonos Beam (Gen 2), Sonos lists a range of matching speaker pairs—including Era 100, Sonos One, and SYMFONISK models—as surround options. It also supports two matching Move 2 or Sonos Play portable speakers under additional setup conditions. The Beam generation matters: the compatibility list below is verified for Beam (Gen 2), not Beam (Gen 1).

Which speakers work with Beam (Gen 2)?

Sonos’s Beam (Gen 2) surround compatibility list includes these speakers and amplifier options:

  • Era 100, Era 100 Pro, Era 100 SL, and Era 300
  • Five
  • One (Gen 1), One (Gen 2), and One SL
  • Play, Play:1, Play:3, and Play:5 (Gen 2)
  • SYMFONISK Bookshelf (Gen 1 and Gen 2), Picture frame, Table lamp (Gen 1 and Gen 2), and Floor lamp
  • Amp and Connect:Amp, which are amplifier routes for connecting speakers rather than standalone wireless surround speakers

Sonos also documents a portable-speaker option: two matching Move 2 speakers or two matching Sonos Play speakers can be used with Beam (Gen 2) as surrounds, subject to the requirements below.

Do the surround speakers have to match?

Usually, yes: Sonos’s rule is to use two speakers of the same model. For example, two Sonos Ones work together, while a One and a Play:1 do not. There are specified exceptions: Sonos allows One with One SL, and lists the SYMFONISK Floor lamp with the SYMFONISK Table lamp (Gen 2) as a related-model pair. Do not assume that other models in the same family can be mixed; check the exact combination against Sonos’s compatibility guidance.

  1. Enable the home theater speaker’s microphone.
  2. Add both portable speakers to the Sonos system as separate rooms before using them as surrounds.
  3. Use the current Sonos app to complete setup.

This portable setup is not established here for Beam (Gen 1).

What changes when speakers become surrounds?

Sonos recommends placing the speakers behind and to the left and right of the usual listening position, with both in the same orientation—either vertical or horizontal. When configured as surrounds, speakers lose AirPlay, Bluetooth audio playback, line-in, and subwoofer-output features.

Ethernet and Era adapter restrictions

Era 100 or Era 300 speakers using the Sonos Combo Adapter have a wiring restriction: if Beam is connected wirelessly, the Era surrounds cannot use Ethernet. If the home theater speaker is wired, the Era speakers may also use Ethernet. Era 100 Pro has a separate PoE provision; the Beam’s network-wiring requirement depends on whether the speakers use a PoE switch or PoE injector. Sonos also notes network-wiring restrictions when two Amps are used for home theater.

Check the Beam generation and app before choosing

Check the model label or product details to identify whether your soundbar is Beam (Gen 1) or Beam (Gen 2). Sonos’s current compatibility selector specifically establishes the list above for Gen 2; it does not establish the complete Gen 1 list, so treat those models as unverified for Gen 1 unless Sonos confirms the exact combination.

App support also differs by generation. Beam (Gen 2) requires the current Sonos app and does not work with the S1 Controller; Beam (Gen 1) works with either the current app or S1. If your system includes older Sonos products, check their app compatibility before planning the setup. Sonos provides an app compatibility table and a Beam setup guide.

  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.

Which pair should you choose?

  • For a current direct option: Choose a matching pair of Era 100 speakers, which Sonos explicitly lists for Beam (Gen 2).
  • To reuse speakers you own: Check whether you have an eligible matching pair, such as two Ones, or the specified One and One SL combination. Availability of older models varies.
  • For furniture-integrated speakers: SYMFONISK models are listed, including the specific Floor lamp and Table lamp (Gen 2) pairing exception.
  • For portable surrounds: Consider two matching Move 2 or Sonos Play speakers only if you can meet the microphone, room, and app setup requirements.

Before buying or repurposing speakers, verify the exact Beam generation and speaker combination, then compare pair availability, placement, and whether you want portable speakers. Current prices and store availability are not established here.

Audio format compatibility is a separate question

Surround-speaker compatibility identifies which physical products can serve as surrounds; it does not determine which audio formats your system will play. Beam (Gen 2) supports Dolby Atmos over HDMI ARC/eARC. Sonos home theater speakers also support Dolby Digital 5.0/5.1 and DTS Digital Surround subject to the applicable app and system restrictions. For the TV connection requirements, see Sonos’s TV requirements for Sonos home theater products.
