Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To break even on a Bitcoin spot trade, your net proceeds from selling must equal the total cash you spent to buy it. Account for fees on both the buy and sell, using the amounts and fee rates that actually apply to your order.
Use the formula that matches how your exchange charges fees
For a simple percentage-fee example, suppose the buy fee is deducted from your cash budget, leaving less money to purchase BTC. Let:
- B = total cash spent on the purchase
- P = BTC purchase price per coin
- fb = buy fee rate as a decimal
- fs = sell fee rate as a decimal
The BTC acquired is B × (1 − fb) ÷ P. The break-even sell price is:
Break-even price = B ÷ [BTC acquired × (1 − fs)]

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If the entire cash budget is spent, there are no other costs, and the buy fee is deducted from that budget, this simplifies to:
Break-even price = P ÷ [(1 − fb) × (1 − fs)]
This version assumes percentage fees on both trade legs and the specific buy-fee convention described above. If a fee is charged on top of the order, taken from the BTC received, or incorporated into a spread rather than shown separately, use your actual cash outlay and the BTC credited instead.

Calculate a break-even price with an example
Assume, for illustration, that you spend $1,000 on Bitcoin at $50,000 per BTC, and the exchange deducts a 0.1% buy fee from the cash budget. The buy fee is $1, leaving $999 for the purchase, so you receive 0.01998 BTC. If the sell fee is also 0.1%, you keep 99.9% of the sale proceeds after that fee.
Using the general formula, the break-even price is $1,000 ÷ (0.01998 × 0.999), or approximately $50,100.20 per BTC. The 0.1% rates here are illustrative inputs, not a universal exchange rate. This target recovers the $1,000 purchase outlay; it does not include any separate transfer or withdrawal costs.

Check the actual fees and execution amounts
Use the rates that apply to your account, order, and fee-payment method—not a rate copied from a generic example. An exchange’s fee can depend on its current schedule, your account’s trading-volume tier, whether the order is maker or taker, and whether you pay fees with the venue’s own token. A market order generally uses the taker rate. A limit order receives maker treatment only if it adds liquidity and is filled as a maker order.
Before submitting an order, check the trade preview and the venue’s current fee schedule. For a more reliable calculation, record:

The displayed spot price may not equal your execution price. Spread or slippage can affect the amount of BTC you receive or the sale proceeds, even when the fee is shown separately. The general calculation does not estimate those effects; use the actual fill amounts when calculating realized break-even.

Break-even sell price = (cash outlay to recover + any additional costs to recover) ÷ [BTC held × (1 − sell fee rate)]
This assumes the sell fee is a percentage of sale proceeds. If the venue charges a fixed fee or takes the fee in BTC or another token, account for that charge in the net proceeds rather than treating it as a percentage of the sale price. The goal is always the same: set net sale proceeds equal to the specific costs you want to recover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Trading break-even is different from tax break-even
A sale price that recovers your cash outlay after trading fees does not by itself determine whether you have a taxable gain or loss. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS describes gain or loss on a digital-asset sale as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized. The basis of purchased digital assets includes purchase cost and qualifying acquisition fees, while amount realized is reduced by transaction costs allocable to the disposition. See the IRS digital-asset FAQs and the IRS Internal Revenue Bulletin 2024-31 for federal guidance and allocation details.
Your tax result can depend on the units sold, their adjusted basis, the transaction type, and applicable rules. Keep records of acquisition dates, units, prices, proceeds, and fees. The IRS FAQ discusses identifying particular units and recordkeeping in specified contexts. Bitcoin.Tax describes using the exchange-reported trade price and time when available, or a time-specific exchange price in certain cases; that is the provider’s description of its method, not an independent evaluation. See Bitcoin.Tax’s price-calculation methodology. Tax treatment outside the United States is not covered by these U.S. sources.
