A rear-mounted teleconverter is a separate optical unit fitted between a compatible camera body and lens. A built-in extender is part of a particular lens and moves into its optical path. “Drop-in teleconverter” is ambiguous: it may mean an in-lens extender, but “drop-in” can also describe a filter inserted into a lens’s rear filter holder. Identify the exact device and check the lens and mount before choosing a converter.
What does “drop-in teleconverter” mean?
It is not established as a standard name for a broadly interchangeable camera accessory. The term may refer to a built-in extender, such as the mechanism in Canon’s EF 200-400mm f/4L lens, or it may be confused with a drop-in filter. Canon’s catalogue lists a 52mm drop-in filter for that lens separately from its integrated 1.4x extender. A filter is not a teleconverter.
To avoid confusion, this article uses “built-in extender” for an optical mechanism integrated into a lens and “rear-mounted teleconverter” for a separate unit mounted between lens and camera.
How do the two designs differ?
| Feature | Rear-mounted teleconverter | Built-in extender |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Separate optical unit between camera body and lens. | Mechanism integrated into a specific lens and moved into its optical path. |
| Handling | Must be attached between the compatible lens and camera. | Canon’s EF 200-400 example engages by a lever; handling varies by lens. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the exact converter, lens and camera mount. Physical fit alone does not prove compatibility. | Specific to its host lens; it is not a universal removable adapter. |
| Reach and exposure | Multiplier increases effective focal length and reduces light reaching the sensor. The loss depends on the converter. | Canon’s cited 1.4x mechanism extends the lens’s range; this example is not a universal specification. |
| Image quality | Additional optics can reduce sharpness; the result depends on the lens-converter combination. | Performance is specific to the lens design; no general comparison is established here. |
How much reach do teleconverters add, and what happens to exposure?
A converter’s multiplier increases effective focal length. For example, Nikon’s Z-system specifications give a 1.4x multiplier with a one-stop light loss for the NIKKOR Z TC-1.4x, and 2.0x with a two-stop loss for the NIKKOR Z TC-2.0x. Those figures apply to these named Nikon converters, not every brand or model. Nikon describes the general purpose this way: “A teleconverter allows you to increase the apparent focal length of a lens, giving you a greater telephoto effect than a lens alone.” Nikon’s teleconverter explainer provides further context.

- 5X telephoto use only: Only for phones with a 5x optical telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone 18 Pro Max 18Pro 17 Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra S25 Xiaomi 15 Ultra Vivo X200 Ultra, and more; not for main or ultra wide cameras; telephoto zoom varies by model
- Real 15x lossless optical zoom: Extends phone telephoto lens from 5x (120mm equivalent) to 15x (360mm equivalent) without digital cropping—retaining clarity and fine details for shooting distant subjects like wildlife, sports, concerts, and portraits
- Multicoated optical system: 12 elements in 6 groups HD optical glass and multilayer coatings minimize glare and distortion while enhancing image sharpness and detail—even at high zoom levels
- 17mm mount + 37mm filter thread: Equipped with a 17mm lens mount for NEEWER phone cages and phone cases; the 37mm front thread supports ND, CPL, and other content creator essential and influencer must have photography filter accessories
- Use with tripod & phone cage: Use a tripod to reduce shake and blur; secure lens with NEEWER 17mm thread cage or case; set max zoom to activate telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, disable Macro Control and cover extra lenses to stop auto switching
The built-in Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L example has a 1.4x extender: its 200–400mm range becomes 280–560mm when engaged, according to DPReview’s 2013 technical review. That range belongs to this lens and is not a general claim about in-lens extenders.
What should you check before using a rear-mounted converter?
- Identify the exact camera mount and lens model. Compatibility is model-specific; a converter that physically attaches may still be unsupported or fail to function correctly.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for that combination. Nikon warns that not every lens is compatible and provides guidance for F- and Z-system combinations. Start with its teleconverter compatibility and specifications page.
- Confirm the converter’s mount and supported lenses. For example, Nikon identifies the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III as an F-bayonet product and links its compatibility table. For a compatible Z lens, Nikon’s specifications for the NIKKOR Z teleconverters distinguish the 1.4x and 2.0x models.
Will a teleconverter reduce image quality?
It can. Nikon cautions that sharpness may decrease, and compatibility and results depend on the particular lens and converter combination. There is no universal amount of degradation established here, so check product-specific guidance rather than assuming every combination performs the same. Nikon discusses the Z-series models in its Z teleconverter overview.

Which type should you choose?
- Consider a rear-mounted converter if you want a separate accessory and your exact camera, lens and converter are listed as compatible. Account for the specified light loss as well as the added reach.
- Use a built-in extender when your particular lens has one and you want to engage that lens’s integrated mechanism. Its availability and operation are lens-specific.
- Clarify “drop-in” before buying. Check whether a listing means an extender or a filter for a rear holder; the two are different accessories.
