A teleconverter is worth considering if you need more reach from a compatible telephoto lens and can afford the loss of light. A 1.4x model increases focal length by 40% and typically costs about one stop; a 2x doubles focal length and typically costs about two stops. The decisive first step is confirming that the exact converter, lens, and camera combination is approved by the manufacturer.
What a teleconverter does
A teleconverter fits between a compatible lens and camera body to multiply the lens’s effective focal length. Nikon describes it as a way to increase a lens’s apparent focal length and create a greater telephoto effect (Nikon’s guide to using teleconverters).
For example, a supported 70–200mm lens would provide approximately 98–280mm with a 1.4x converter, or 140–400mm with a 2x converter. These are focal-length calculations, not confirmation that a particular lens accepts either converter.
What you gain—and what you give up
More reach without carrying another long lens
A converter can help frame distant wildlife or sports from existing compatible equipment. It may be a compact alternative to carrying a longer lens, although whether it is lighter or less expensive depends on the specific gear being compared. Sony presents its FE converters for uses including sports and wildlife.

Less light and a smaller effective maximum aperture
Magnification comes with an exposure cost. Sony specifies approximately one stop of light loss for its SEL14TC 1.4x converter and approximately two stops for its SEL20TC 2x converter. The maximum effective aperture also becomes smaller. Depending on the scene, you may need a slower shutter speed or higher ISO to compensate.
That trade-off matters most when light is limited or the subject is moving quickly: a slower shutter can make action harder to freeze, while raising ISO may affect the resulting image. The exact outcome depends on the camera, lens, converter, and shooting conditions.

- The 2X Teleconverter can make the focal length of all the Canon EF lenses increased to 2 times, Built-in 4 groups, 7 pcs optics, and the exposure factor enlarge approx 4. (equals to 2 aperture).
- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Autofocus and image quality depend on the combination
Do not assume every converter preserves the same autofocus behavior or image quality. Sony describes performance for supported Sony lens combinations; Nikon directs users to model-specific compatibility information. Manufacturer specifications establish the stated magnification and light loss, but they do not establish a universal image-quality penalty or a cross-brand ranking of converter performance.
How to choose between 1.4x and 2x
| Option | Focal-length change | Typical light loss | Example with a 70–200mm lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4x | 40% more focal length | About one stop; Sony specifies this for its SEL14TC | Approximately 98–280mm |
| 2x | Twice the focal length | About two stops; Sony specifies this for its SEL20TC | Approximately 140–400mm |
The example focal lengths are arithmetic illustrations, not compatibility or performance guarantees. The Sony light-loss figures are manufacturer product specifications, not independent comparative laboratory measurements.

- Compatible with select Nikon NIKKOR Z long telephoto lenses.
- Increases the native reach of compatible lenses by 40%—without any loss of resolution and with outstanding image quality.
- Retains all AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss.
- Can use every focus point of your Z series camera's sensor all the way down to f/11, unprecedented for teleconverters.
- Maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x. Durable and dust and drip resistant.
A 1.4x converter is the more conservative reach increase on paper, with a smaller stated exposure cost. A 2x gives a larger increase but costs more light. Choose based on the reach you need, the light available, and the shutter speed your subject requires—not on multiplier alone.
Check compatibility before buying
Teleconverters are not universal accessories. Mount, physical design, rear-element clearance, and manufacturer-approved combinations all matter; sharing a brand does not guarantee a fit. Check the exact lens and converter in the manufacturer’s current compatibility guide, and verify body compatibility and any relevant firmware notes.

- 2x telephoto lens converter: For smartphones with a built in 5x telephoto camera, this converter doubles optical zoom from 5x (120 mm equivalent) to 10x (240 mm equivalent) for distant shooting without digital cropping or image loss
- For 5X telephoto cameras only: Not for main camera; cell phone accessories compatible with Vivo X200 Ultra Xiaomi 15 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S26 S25 Ultra Android iPhone 18 Pro Max 18 Pro 17 16 Pro/Pro Max; select 5X before use if optical zoom is below 5X
- Compact and lightweight: Compared to standard external zoom lenses, this 2x converter is shorter and lighter; it features a 17mm thread for 17mm threaded phone cages, cases, and lens clips; content creator essential photography and filming accessories
- Multicoated optical glass: 7 elements in 5 groups of HD optical glass and multiple nanocoatings reduce glare and distortion, resist water, fingerprints, and scratches, and ensure excellent light transmission; a cleaning cloth is included
- Important note: Different phone brands may require different zoom levels to activate the telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, apply the included stickers to cover the wide angle lens to prevent lens switching caused by light sensor interference
- Identify the exact camera body, lens model, and converter model you intend to use.
- Look up that lens and converter in the manufacturer’s official Nikon compatibility information or Sony converter compatibility list, as applicable.
- Confirm the combination’s listed functions and restrictions rather than inferring autofocus or stabilization support from the brand or mount alone.
- If a model is not listed or the instructions are unclear, contact the manufacturer before ordering.
Sony’s compatibility information is organized by lens model; Nikon likewise points users to model-specific documentation. An exact compatibility answer therefore requires the gear models, not just the camera brand.

There is no universal test establishing that a teleconverter always beats cropping, or that it always produces better results than using a longer lens. A converter provides optical magnification but reduces the available light; cropping avoids that exposure cost but gives up part of the captured frame. Which trade-off is preferable depends on the lens-converter combination, the image detail you need, and the conditions in which you shoot.

Before deciding, compare the options on these points:
- Compatibility: Is the exact converter supported by your lens and camera?
- Framing: Does the multiplier provide enough extra reach for the subject?
- Exposure: Can you accept the light loss and maintain the shutter speed you need?
- Performance: What autofocus and image behavior does the manufacturer document for your exact combination?
- Practicality: How do the converter’s cost and carrying convenience compare with cropping or a longer lens you would actually use?
When a teleconverter is worth it
It is most compelling when you already own a supported telephoto lens, regularly need more reach, and can tolerate the effective-aperture loss in your shooting conditions. It is less appealing when you frequently work in low light, need fast shutter speeds, or cannot confirm that the exact combination is supported. Since image quality and autofocus behavior vary by gear, assess the manufacturer’s specifications for your models rather than relying on a universal claim about converters.
