An external GPU can triple frame rates in the right setup, but that is a possible outcome—not a dependable eGPU multiplier. The biggest gains are most plausible when a laptop’s integrated graphics are the main bottleneck and the game can use a desktop-class GPU. CPU limits, the laptop’s starting graphics performance, Thunderbolt bandwidth, and which display you use can all reduce the uplift.
What an eGPU changes
An eGPU setup pairs a laptop with a desktop graphics card in an external enclosure, connected through a supported high-speed interface such as Thunderbolt. The enclosure may also provide power delivery or extra ports, depending on its model. The external card can replace the laptop’s weaker graphics processor for supported workloads, but it does not remove the laptop’s other performance limits.
That distinction matters: a faster GPU helps most when the game is waiting on graphics processing. If the laptop’s CPU, memory, game engine, or connection is the limiting factor, adding a more powerful card cannot deliver its full desktop performance.
When an eGPU can approach a threefold gain
A dramatic uplift is most plausible when the starting point is weak integrated graphics, the game is GPU-limited, and the eGPU connection and display route are not imposing a major additional constraint. In that situation, the external card may move the system from struggling to render frames to handling the graphics workload much more comfortably.

“Triple” should still be treated as a result for a particular configuration, not a general expectation. There is no universal eGPU FPS multiplier: results change by game, resolution, settings, host laptop, graphics card, and test setup. Notebookcheck’s 2024 review of the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 4090 Gaming Box reports game-specific results across resolutions and settings rather than one figure that applies to all eGPUs: Notebookcheck’s RTX 4090 Gaming Box review.
Why the gain can be smaller than expected
The laptop may already be fast enough
If the laptop already has a capable discrete GPU, replacing or supplementing it with an external card may produce a more modest improvement than upgrading from integrated graphics. The starting GPU and its power limit are part of any meaningful comparison.

The CPU or game can become the bottleneck
Some games depend heavily on CPU performance or engine behavior. In those cases, a faster GPU may not substantially raise frame rates. Comparisons between an eGPU laptop and a desktop also need care: if their CPUs or other platform components differ, the FPS gap cannot be credited to the Thunderbolt link or graphics card alone. Tom’s Hardware highlights this sort of CPU mismatch as a caveat in its report of a specific RTX 4090 test: Tom’s Hardware’s eGPU performance report.
The connection has less bandwidth than an internal desktop slot
Thunderbolt 3 is specified at 40 Gbps. HP describes its eGPU connection as using four PCIe 3.0 lanes and compares that with a desktop PCIe x16 slot, characterizing the four lanes as 25% of the slot’s bandwidth: HP’s eGPU guide. These are interface-level comparisons, not a prediction that an eGPU loses a fixed percentage of FPS. Real game performance depends on how much data the workload moves across the connection and on the rest of the system.

A separate specific test summarized by Tom’s Hardware reported 2.33 GB/s of PCI Express feature-test bandwidth for a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. That result describes the tested enclosure and test conditions; it is not a universal bandwidth figure or an FPS penalty for every eGPU.
The laptop’s built-in screen can add a return trip
When an external monitor is connected to the eGPU, rendered frames can go directly from the card to that display. With the laptop’s internal screen, frames must travel back to the laptop over the host connection, sharing its limited bandwidth. HP describes using an external monitor in an eGPU setup. Comparing both display routes can be useful, but there is no fixed gain guaranteed simply by switching screens.

How to judge an eGPU benchmark
A headline FPS multiplier is only useful if it describes a like-for-like test. Before applying a result to your laptop, check:
- Starting graphics: Was the baseline integrated graphics or a discrete laptop GPU? Which model and power limit?
- Host and connection: Which laptop, interface, and enclosure were used?
- Display route: Was the monitor connected to the eGPU, or was the laptop’s internal display used?
- Workload: Which game, resolution, graphics settings, and game version? Was it GPU- or CPU-limited?
- Performance measure: Is the figure average FPS, a low-percentile result, or another measure? Frame-time consistency and stutter can affect the experience even when average FPS rises.
- Test platform: Were CPU and other system differences controlled, or might they explain part of the gap?
Notebookcheck’s 2024 Gaming Box review shows why the game and settings must accompany a performance claim: results vary across its tested games and resolutions. Tom’s Hardware’s report likewise concerns a particular RTX 4090 and enclosure test, not every laptop-and-eGPU combination.

What to check before buying
Compatibility is model-specific. Before choosing an enclosure or desktop graphics card, verify the laptop’s eGPU support and connection, the enclosure’s supported cards, physical clearance and power requirements, and the total cost against alternatives such as a gaming laptop or desktop.
- Host compatibility: Confirm that the laptop supports eGPU use over the particular port; the presence of a connector alone is not a guarantee.
- Enclosure fit: Check the enclosure’s GPU dimensions, power capacity, supported interface, and any included power delivery or ports. For example, Sapphire identifies its GearBox 500 as a Thunderbolt 3 eGFX enclosure; its product page does not establish compatibility with every laptop or card: Sapphire GearBox 500 product page.
- Whole-system value: Include the enclosure and graphics card in the cost, and consider the space, power, and portability trade-offs alongside the laptop you already own.
- Display plan: Decide whether you will use an external monitor connected to the eGPU or rely on the laptop screen, since the display path can affect performance.
How to make a fair before-and-after comparison
- Choose one game and record the laptop model, baseline GPU, resolution, graphics settings, and display route.
- Measure the same scene or built-in benchmark at the same settings after connecting the eGPU. Keep the game version and other conditions as consistent as possible.
- Compare average FPS alongside low-percentile performance or frame-time consistency where available; a single average can hide stutter.
- If practical, compare an external monitor connected to the eGPU with the laptop’s internal display, changing only the display route.
- Interpret the result as specific to that laptop, enclosure, card, game, and test—not as a forecast for all eGPU setups.
The useful conclusion is not whether an eGPU triples FPS in general, but whether it removes the particular graphics bottleneck in your setup at a cost and level of complexity that make sense.
