To connect WordPress to an AI tool through the WordPress MCP Adapter, install the adapter, choose either a local STDIO connection through WP-CLI or an HTTP connection through the remote proxy, and configure an MCP client to use it. The adapter exposes WordPress capabilities registered through the Abilities API; it does not grant new site permissions by itself.
What the WordPress MCP Adapter does
The WordPress MCP Adapter connects the WordPress Abilities API to the Model Context Protocol (MCP). An MCP client can use it to discover and invoke WordPress capabilities that are exposed as abilities. Check WordPress and PHP requirements
As of the package documentation accessed October 7, 2026, WordPress 6.9 or later is recommended; it includes the Abilities API in WordPress core. WordPress 6.8 requires the separate Abilities API package or plugin. The package lists PHP 7.4 or later as a requirement. Check the package documentation before installing because its requirements can change.

The documentation also describes installing a development checkout as a plugin: clone the WordPress MCP Adapter repository into wp-content/plugins/mcp-adapter, then use Composer to install its dependencies. For plugin projects that may load different versions of shared dependencies, the documentation recommends Jetpack Autoloader to reduce version conflicts. Use the approach that matches how your site manages and deploys dependencies.
Choose a connection transport

The package documentation describes these workflows but does not publish performance or security benchmarks comparing them. Choose based on whether the client can run WP-CLI locally or needs to reach the site over HTTP.

Configure the MCP client to launch
wp mcp-adapter serve. The package documentation’s example supplies a site path, server ID, and WordPress user; use values for your own installation and account. -
Use WP-CLI to list available MCP servers and test tool discovery, as described in the package documentation.

Ask the client to discover or invoke an exposed ability to confirm the connection. What it can do remains determined by the abilities available to the server and the WordPress user’s permissions.

Use the MCP client’s discovery function to check that the connection can see the abilities exposed by the server.
Understand which abilities appear in the client
On the default server, the adapter exposes abilities marked meta.mcp.public through adapter tools for discovery, information, and execution. This does not mean every WordPress ability automatically appears as its own MCP tool. A custom server can explicitly list the abilities it exposes. If an ability is missing, check whether it is designated for public MCP exposure or included in that custom server’s configuration.
Configure an MCP client
The package README names Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code, and Cursor as clients to configure. These are examples in the documentation, not a compatibility guarantee for every client or release. Follow the current setup instructions for your chosen client and confirm it supports the documented transport and configuration format.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- WP-CLI command cannot start: Confirm WP-CLI can access the intended WordPress installation and that the client configuration provides the correct site path, server ID, and user.
- HTTP connection fails: Check the WordPress API URL and the configured username and Application Password, and confirm the client is launching the documented remote proxy.
- Connection works but an ability is absent: Check whether the ability has
meta.mcp.publicon the default server, or whether the custom server explicitly lists it. - Dependency conflict in a plugin project: Review the project’s shared dependencies; the package documentation recommends Jetpack Autoloader to reduce version conflicts when plugins load overlapping packages.
- Setup instructions do not match your versions: Recheck the package requirements and README, since package versions and client configuration can change.
