You cannot make a blockchain’s existing transaction signatures quantum-resistant by buying a hardware wallet, moving a seed phrase to metal, or choosing a product marketed as “quantum-safe.” The network must support post-quantum signatures, and your wallet must support the network’s migration process. For now, follow official guidance for each chain you use; Ethereum says users do not need to take action now, while Bitcoin’s surfaced migration proposal remains a draft.

What you can do now

There is no universal wallet setting or migration procedure to enable today. Use the official protocol and wallet channels for each blockchain you hold assets on, and migrate only when that network and your wallet document a supported procedure.

  • Check the chain’s official guidance. Look for an activated network change, not just a proposal, research announcement, or wallet marketing claim.
  • Check your wallet’s own documentation. A real migration should explain which accounts it applies to and how to complete it safely. Do not enter a seed phrase into a site or tool promoted through an unsolicited message.
  • Keep using ordinary security practices. Keep wallet software current, protect recovery information, and verify transaction details. These steps help with conventional wallet risks; they do not change a blockchain’s signature algorithm.
  • Do not rush a transfer because of a quantum-risk headline. A transfer made without an official, chain-supported migration process is not a post-quantum upgrade.

Why a hardware wallet or seed backup cannot make an account quantum-safe

A wallet manages keys and helps authorize transactions, but the blockchain’s protocol determines which signatures validators or nodes accept. A hardware wallet can protect private keys from some device and custody risks, and a durable backup can help preserve recovery information. Neither, by itself, changes the signature scheme that the network verifies.

Post-quantum cryptography standards are available, but standards do not automatically upgrade any blockchain. NIST finalized FIPS 203 for ML-KEM key establishment and FIPS 204 and FIPS 205 for the digital-signature schemes ML-DSA and SLH-DSA. ML-KEM is for establishing shared keys, not for signing blockchain transactions; transaction authorization requires a signature scheme that the network supports. NIST’s approval notice and migration guidance explain the standards and the broader transition work.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

That distinction matters when evaluating “quantum-safe” claims: ask whether the blockchain has activated post-quantum signature verification and whether the wallet supports the network’s documented migration. A device or backup alone cannot answer either question.

What Ethereum users should know

Ethereum’s quantum-resistance guidance says users do not need to take action now. Its described route is future-facing: account abstraction and EIP-8141 are presented as a proposed way to give accounts signature agility, with EIP-8141 under consideration for Hegotá in the second half of 2026. That is not a live migration feature or an instruction to move funds today.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets

The same Ethereum guidance says an account that has sent a transaction has exposed its public key onchain. A never-spent account has an additional layer of protection because its address hash, rather than its public key, is visible. This is a chain- and account-specific distinction, not a guarantee of permanent safety or a reason to delay a later supported migration.

Ethereum also identifies the treatment of dormant wallets as an open governance question. If Ethereum’s migration route becomes available, follow the network and wallet instructions for your account type rather than assuming every account will migrate in the same way.

What Bitcoin users should know

Bitcoin’s surfaced post-quantum migration plan, BIP-361, is a proposal, not a migration users can perform today. The Bitcoin BIP index lists it as informational and draft. Do not treat a draft proposal as an activated Bitcoin rule or use it as the basis for an unsupported wallet transfer.

How to judge a future migration announcement

When a chain announces post-quantum support, verify that both the protocol and your wallet support the change. A useful announcement should make clear:

  • Whether post-quantum signature verification is activated on the network, rather than merely proposed.
  • Which wallet software implements the supported migration and where its official instructions are published.
  • How the procedure treats exposed, dormant, or contract-based accounts, if those categories differ on that chain.
  • Whether the migration is optional, time-limited, or governed by other network rules.

Do not infer that a specific wallet is ready just because it supports hardware keys, account abstraction, or a post-quantum standard in another context. The relevant evidence is documented support for the blockchain’s actual migration process.

How soon could quantum computers threaten crypto wallets?

There is no established date for when a quantum computer capable of breaking today’s blockchain signatures will exist. Ethereum’s guidance reports a March 2026 Google Quantum AI estimate of roughly 1,200 logical qubits for breaking 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography. That is an attributed research estimate, not a forecast of when such a machine will be built or deployed.

The useful response is preparation, not a countdown: use official chain-specific updates and wait for supported protocol and wallet migration instructions. NIST describes post-quantum transition work as a phased effort in its migration FAQ; that standards work is separate from a blockchain adopting new signature rules.
