Your recovery phrase and private keys must stay secret; a public key is not itself spending authority. A recovery phrase can restore many deterministic wallets, but the exact process depends on the wallet. Quantum computers are a future cryptographic concern, not a reason to assume Bitcoin keys can be derived today. The technical proposals discussed below are Bitcoin-specific; other cryptocurrencies may use different wallet, address, and signature rules.

What is a seed phrase, and how is it different from a private key?

A seed phrase, often called a recovery phrase, is a human-readable representation of randomly generated data used to create a wallet. Under BIP 39, the mnemonic encodes computer-generated entropy and can be converted into a seed. BIP 39 specifies entropy sizes from 128 to 256 bits and is not intended for sentences a person invents as a substitute for randomness.

A wallet uses its standards and derivation paths to generate private keys and their corresponding public keys. A private key is secret signing authority: in Bitcoin, anyone who obtains the relevant key may be able to spend the associated funds. Bitcoin.org’s glossary puts it plainly: “Private keys must never be revealed as they allow you to spend bitcoins for their respective Bitcoin wallet.”

The phrase is not necessarily a universal, one-step substitute for every wallet backup. Restoring access can depend on the wallet’s standards, derivation paths, optional passphrase, policy, and scripts. Check the specific wallet’s recovery instructions before relying on a phrase as its only backup. Bitcoin.org explains that many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one phrase, while advising users to verify how their particular wallet handles backups in its wallet security guidance.

Can someone steal crypto with my public key?

A public key is not a private key and does not, by itself, give someone the authority to sign transactions. Sharing a public key therefore does not have the same consequence as disclosing a recovery phrase or private key. But “public” does not mean that every related piece of information is harmless: extended public keys can reveal wallet structure and transaction information, and some Bitcoin output types expose public keys on-chain.

Bitcoin’s BIP 32 describes hierarchical wallets and explains why extended keys need extra care. In particular, a parent extended public key combined with a non-hardened descendant private key can expose the parent extended private key. Do not treat an extended public key as a spending secret, but share it only when you understand the privacy and key-management implications.

For Bitcoin, the proposal BIP 360 distinguishes long-exposure risk, where a public key is available for a long time, from short-exposure risk during a spend. It says address reuse and outputs that expose public keys can increase long-exposure risk. This is a proposal’s analysis of possible quantum threats, not evidence that a quantum attacker can currently derive Bitcoin private keys.

How should I back up a recovery phrase?

A backup has to balance two goals: keep other people from discovering it, and preserve your ability to recover it if the original is lost or damaged. Bitcoin.org recommends protecting backups from disclosure, using secure locations, and considering multiple physical locations and durable media. More copies can improve recovery odds, but each copy creates another place that must be secured. BIP 93 describes this as a trade-off between minimizing exposure and keeping enough copies to recover.

  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  • Use the wallet’s own documented backup and recovery procedure; do not assume another wallet will interpret the phrase the same way.
  • Keep the backup somewhere private and protected from foreseeable loss or damage. Choose a medium and location you can still access when needed.
  • If you make more than one copy, secure each copy and consider whether placing them in separate locations improves resilience without creating unacceptable exposure.
  • Do not share the phrase in a message, support form, or unsolicited recovery prompt.

Paper is one possible physical medium, but the important decision is whether the chosen backup will remain private, durable enough for your circumstances, and recoverable. No backup medium eliminates every risk. A dedicated signing device may keep keys offline, but it does not make a disclosed recovery phrase safe.

Is a recovery phrase enough for multisig or custom wallet policies?

Not always. A wallet that uses a custom policy, multisignature arrangement, or nonstandard script may need information beyond a seed phrase to reconstruct the wallet and locate existing funds. For certain policies outside common standard patterns, BIP 388 says the wallet policy may also need to be backed up. A policy backup can expose information about wallet structure and activity even if it does not, by itself, allow someone to steal funds.

Before depending on a backup, verify that the recovery process can restore the wallet’s policy and discover its existing funds, not just regenerate keys. If the setup uses more than one key or custom wallet descriptors, preserve the additional recovery information specified by the wallet.

How can I avoid seed-phrase scams and address mistakes?

Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance says legitimate support teams should never ask for a seed phrase or private key. Do not enter either into a support form, follow a message link to a recovery prompt, or give it to someone claiming they need it to fix your wallet.

Before sending funds, verify the entire destination address. Address poisoning can put a lookalike address into transaction history, hoping you will copy it instead of the intended destination. Do not rely on a few matching first or last characters when choosing an address.

Will quantum computers break Bitcoin?

There is no established date here for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer, and the cited sources do not establish a mandatory wallet migration date. Quantum risk is a reason to understand public-key exposure and follow protocol developments, not a basis for claiming that today’s Bitcoin private keys can already be recovered from public keys.

On August 13, 2024, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced approval of three post-quantum cryptography standards. FIPS 203 is a key-encapsulation mechanism standard; FIPS 204 and FIPS 205 are digital-signature standards designed to resist future quantum attacks. These standards do not automatically change Bitcoin’s or another cryptocurrency’s signature rules: adoption would require changes to the relevant protocol and wallet software.

BIP 361 discusses possible Bitcoin post-quantum migration and legacy-signature sunset approaches. Its estimates, dates, and projected effects are claims made in a proposal, not an agreed Bitcoin timeline or an independently established forecast. BIP 360 is also a proposal, and it does not introduce a post-quantum signature scheme.
