Not with computers available today. A sufficiently powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computer could threaten Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that use vulnerable public-key signatures—but this is a future risk, not a demonstrated way to crack wallets now. The concern is that such a machine could derive a private key from an exposed public key. It would not automatically break every wallet, coin, or part of a cryptocurrency network.
What a quantum computer could attack
A cryptocurrency wallet is software or hardware that manages the keys used to authorize transactions. The key risk is not that a quantum computer can simply open a wallet app; it is that a sufficiently capable machine could undermine the digital signature scheme that proves an owner authorized a spend.
In Bitcoin, ECDSA signatures and Taproot’s Schnorr signatures use the secp256k1 elliptic curve. Their security relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public key using classical computers. Shor’s algorithm, running on a cryptographically relevant quantum computer, could in principle solve that underlying elliptic-curve discrete-log problem. The Chaincode Labs report explains this threat to both signature types in its May 2025 analysis of Bitcoin and quantum computing.
The same basic concern can apply to other cryptocurrencies that rely on public-key signature systems vulnerable to quantum algorithms. It does not follow that every cryptocurrency is equally exposed: the relevant signature scheme, how it is used, and the network’s ability to migrate all matter.

Why the risk depends on public-key exposure
The attack described above requires a public key to target. Some outputs reveal the public key on-chain; others can keep it concealed until a spend. Funds associated with an exposed key would be more directly at risk if a capable quantum attacker existed. Exposure is therefore not uniform across Bitcoin addresses, outputs, or usage histories.
There is no sufficiently authoritative, independently checked current total established here for how much bitcoin has exposed public keys. The BIP 361 proposal page gives a dated estimate, but it is a proposal’s estimate rather than a settled network-wide measurement.

Wallet signatures and Bitcoin mining are different problems
| Part of Bitcoin | What it does | Quantum concern |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction signatures | Authorize spending by proving control of the relevant private key. | Shor’s algorithm could in principle derive a private key from its public key on a sufficiently capable quantum computer. |
| Proof-of-work mining | Uses hash searching to compete to add blocks. | Grover’s algorithm offers a quadratic search speedup in an idealized setting, not an unrestricted or instant mining advantage. |
A June 2026 preprint by Iosif M. Gershteyn and Jacob A. Alber concludes that Grover’s algorithm does not meaningfully threaten Bitcoin proof-of-work mining under the paper’s analysis. Practical costs, limits on parallelization, and Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment are relevant; the conclusion should not be treated as a claim about every imaginable future machine. See the authors’ preprint on quantum computing and Bitcoin and Ethereum.
When could a quantum computer pose a real threat?
No cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists today, according to the June 2026 preprint. NIST says estimates for when one might be possible vary widely and that no one knows the timeline. Its explainer notes that some expect one in less than 10 years, but that is one view, not a reliable deadline. NIST also warns that integrating new cryptographic standards into real systems can take 10 to 20 years; that is a general observation about system integration, not a Bitcoin migration forecast. The June 2026 preprint by Gershteyn and Alber estimates approximately a one-in-six chance of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer by 2035, near 30% by 2040, and about 60% by 2050. These are outputs of the authors’ forecast model, not NIST estimates or scientific consensus. They should be read as uncertain scenarios, not as a countdown or prediction of when wallets will be cracked.

Do not treat this as a current wallet breach
The described attack depends on quantum capabilities that are not available today. This issue is a reason for protocol-level preparation, not evidence that current Bitcoin transactions or wallets are being broken by quantum computers.

A hardware wallet does not change the signature scheme
A hardware wallet can help with other key-management risks, but it does not replace Bitcoin’s signature algorithm or make an existing output post-quantum. Likewise, creating a new address alone does not establish quantum safety. The required protection would depend on a supported post-quantum signature scheme and a Bitcoin network migration.
Watch for an implemented network migration, not a product claim
NIST finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards on August 13, 2024, and encourages organizations to begin transitioning. Those standards are cryptographic building blocks; they do not automatically change Bitcoin’s consensus rules or upgrade wallets. Details are available from NIST’s post-quantum cryptography project.

Any Bitcoin transition would require protocol changes, implementation in wallets and other infrastructure, and adoption across the ecosystem. Users would then need a supported way to move funds into compatible outputs. A proposed migration path appears in BIP 361, which discusses post-quantum scripts and eventually tightening legacy signature verification. It remains a proposal, not an adopted Bitcoin upgrade; the eventual design, activation, timetable, and treatment of funds that cannot be moved remain unsettled in the cited material.
A 2024 paper, Downtime Required for Bitcoin Quantum-Safety, models the transition cost and argues that migration should finish before an ECDSA-breaking machine becomes available. Its downtime estimate is a result under the paper’s assumptions, not an observed transition or a Bitcoin network commitment.
